I think because Denali is solely on US land, they can rename it (until we change it back). But since the Gulf of Mexico borders other countries, we can't rename it. We can CALL it any new name on unofficial or strictly US maps, but shared bodies of water cannot be renamed on official maps & charts.
If you read the text of the executive order, it only names the coastal waters of the US southern coast, not the entire gulf. Even if we assume the EO is legal, the Gulf of Mexico is still the Gulf of Mexico.
If it was being done for logical sense like "Well three countries border the gulf so lets call it Gulf of the Americas" rather than "USA! USA! AMURICA!" it would almost be excusable.
to be fair, this was not DOGE's move, at least not officially, as far as I understand; this was an initiative by Duffy in response to Trump's executive order
