Not entirely sure what to make of this

NEW: Judge Xinis stays discovery in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case until April 30, 2025.

She says she's staying discovery "with the agreement of the parties."

Otherwise, the basis for the stay remains unclear because the underlying motions are under seal.

I’m a civics teacher and not a lawyer but if I had to guess it would be that Xinis is trying to be as reasonable as possible so if she has to go to contempt proceedings she can argue that she gave the admin every opportunity to comply.

I would take that in a heartbeat. But I can't say that I wouldn't support and enjoy Judge Xinis putting a justified judicial hammer of contempt down on this illegal bullshit.

I (an actual lawyer) would do what my client wanted. And what he wanted would depend in part on my estimate of what we can get in going to trial. And on what they're offering. Maybe they'll say they can get him out of jail but he can't come back to the US. What would you do?

Well, you're asking for something that's in those sealed papers. And Abrego Garcia didn't just say "I consent," he filed papers that are also sealed. And the tenor of those papers is almost certainly that the parties think it possible they could resolve this matter themselves.

The offer may be something short of his coming back to the US, however. At least so far. And maybe it means they REALLY don't want those depositions to be done. Which would be the best case for him. But hard to see them agreeing to have him back in the US, after claiming he's a terrorist.
