These multinational corporations are free to take the tariff out of their profit margins rather than impose it on the consumer. I definitely could see that happening - they’re generous like that.

Think about it, if they do that it stifles them and gives Musk the advantage on top of the advantage where the tariffs hit him the least, and crushes his competition. So much corruption!
I guess we'll see how much they love Trump. They can take massive losses to back up Trump's claims that consumers don't pay for the tariffs. They're about to take massive losses in volume anyways, so it might just depend on how they want to take their losses.
Tesla makes their cars in China. Elon should be paying the China tariffs plus this new tariff on all foreign made cars. Vice President Trump is giving him exclusions.
Everytime you think it's not possible trump could be any dumber......he just hits another amazing level of stupidity. Time for bed 🍊 grandpa! Empty those diapers first!
He puts on huge tariffs, warns Canada and the EU not to make deals between them, warns other countries not to retaliate, and warns the auto industry not to raise prices. Is this guy for real?
No automaker is going to take those tariffs out of their profits and what kind of "free market" is it that he would tell them what to do. I guess all those American values are out the window.
Make them suffer so they take to the streets. Dictatorship is knocking at the door! Time is short. Protest peacefully in 10s of millions simultaneously while you still can!
Just another facet of how using tariffs as a blunt weapon (in the hands of a Neanderthal unsure how to properly wield it) will hurt moderate to low income folks most. Yes the US based car manufacturers WILL use this as an opportunity to increase prices and margins. See: Covid car prices.
That's definitely on the radar. Sooner than later. They won't stop until full dictatorship is in place. Project 2025 goal is 180 days to complete. We are only 1/3 there yet look at the destruction already.
It takes critical thinking to make the connection between Trump telling auto makers to not raise prices on new cars to the fact that other countries do not pay the Tariffs. That’s a connection that his followers are unwilling or incapable of making.
I’m sure all these Fortune 1000 CEOs are over the moon about having donated so much to get this buffoon elected so he could obliterate their companies and stock prices.
They are probably all gleefully downsizing their homes and yachts as we speak.
That’s my thinking, too. It was rich CEOs and the people who love them that put him in the White House, thinking he would be good for business and the tax cuts would pay for themselves.
When he burns their portfolios and their generational wealth, they will start calling their pocket Senators.
He'll probably announce a government subsidy for US automakers to counteract the tariffs. Robbing Peter (tax payers) to pay Paul (automaker shareholders). He likes to create problems and then half fix them and tell everyone he's great. I know some dopes that will fall for it.
So unfettered capitalism is good unless it runs counter to Trump's policies, namely tariffs. Is Trump also telling Walmart not to pass on cost of tariffs to consumers?
That’s why corporations always pay their taxes. And never vote for some clown who will give them tax breaks that will require the rest of us to live in austerity. Bc they’re generous and good decent Americans who CARE about other Americans.
It's not supply and demand when the government interferes and puts its finger on the scale, to take things out of balance and remove the efficiency of the market
And those tarrifs lead to a net loss in employment because the protected industry didn't hire people. Why hire people when you can invest in labour saving technology. That, and the mobility of capital is why American jobs in manufacturing have disappeared. Tarrifs don't affect either.
Automotive OEMs make between 7-10% margins on new cars according to official industry figures. Dealerships make roughly 4%. So 25% tariff fees will put them all into a loss making position. Car companies will pull out of the US market altogether. Close up shop, starting with Fiat/Alfa Romeo.
And remember - it’s not just new cars that will be more expensive. If you need repair or even just routine mice on your current vehicle, good chance the parts will come across a border and incur a huge tax (or tariff if you prefer).
Wife and I bought a new Ford escape, around 20k miles it started lurching forward from stop, even with the brakes depressed. Known transmission issue, replaced it. Came back 5k later same issue because they put the same transmission in there.
Anecdote yes, but found on road dead is a common saying.
Just nuts we haven’t been through year one of this idiots presidency. We are such chaos because he is fucking baby! Instead of making things better! I don’t know if this country can last 3 more years of shitty management which is available at every Trump hotel for free already!
That is the way tariffs work. You raise the cost of imports so that people buy the local product rather than the suddenly more import. Do not question why people wanted to by the import in the first place or why US vehicles do not sell well overseas.
Warning big donors not to raise prices. A lot of GOPPERs must be wincing at that threat.
The stable genius shoots himself in the foot with regularity. Luckily, he keeps missing the bone spurs.
So trump is essentially extorting the car importer/retailers in the US. If you want to compete here you’ll pay a 27.5% tax to the government but not raise retail prices. No importer will operate in a losing market. There will simply be a contraction in supply.
Like the regulatory agencies that would be necessary to make this a thing, the support of unions, and the spontaneous generosity of billionaires are all things that Trump and his entire party are VEHEMENTLY opposed to.
Dear auto makers:
Trump who thinks he is king just warned you to not pass on the cost of his tariffs to the consumer! Which he swore would not happen when he put tariffs on imported goods!
You glad you voted for him?
US is a net importer of goods (even including weapons, and bourbon). You may have a recession. They will have a depression worse that the great one of 1929.
But you forget how spoiled and pathetic a lot of country, especially magats, is. It simply does have the slightest tolerance for inconvenience or hardship. See Pandemic.
The worst of us grew up with stories of the depression from their grand parents. And they were bored by those stories. Imagine boomers trying to live those times. I’m not saying I, and elder millennial, will do any better but at least I’m not surprised by any of this.
Nope. No tariffs for those made here. Harming his competition.
Is Musk going to ship some from China & say they were made here? He’s sleazy so probably.
Most companies' business plan is to sell things for more than they have cost to produce. Bankruptcy is not viewed as successful even if the management succeeds in personally enriching themselves by defaulting on creditors, defrauding investors, and stealing retirement funds from the employees.
It took DECADES for US automakers to get somewhat competitive w/foreign & now he's going to put us behind again. I pass 12 Hyundais to 1 Ford or Chevy on the road. This tariff war is BS & he knows we still have to compete. Penalizing US companies & workers who will be laid off. This regime hates us.
In the US, Toyota has a 15% market share, followed by Ford with 13%, Hyundai with 11% and Honda with 9%. However take out the F150 and Ford are done. Not much will change apart from prices rising.
I think less than 40% parts of Ford F-150 made in the US? Remember for decades thanks to free trade Canadian and Mexican parts count as domestic as well.
Team drump-do€he is digging in on all their efforts. Make this coming Tuesday international Donald Trump Fools day. Mark your calendar and send the regards he deserves😉
The tarrifs will be implemented, the car company and any other company affected will need a bail out, and they'll use that need to pass a 4 trillion dollar borrowing and spending package, to bail out said companies.
Your oppression is their profession.
I guess that we're talking about tariffs on car parts or raw materials. Trump is trying to shift car manufacturers' use of these to domestic, but doesn't want them to pass on the concomitant increases to the public, which would hurt him politically.
Ford, Honda, Cadillac have models that are USA made.
Volkswagen & Toyota are assembled here.
Crappy Tesla are made here which is why the tariffs…. so it hurts Edolf’s competition.

Well, sure, we saw how patrioticly they absorbed price increases during Covid supply chain shortage that led into the inflation we have now. I'm sure they'll do that to help consumers while we go through the Trumpcession.
So now the “ president” is going to run the auto companies as well as the country? Really? I thought the Republicans were all about free enterprise. If Trump doesn’t want the auto industry to raise prices due to HIS tariffs, then call off the tariffs. Simple enough.
The longer he is allowed to stay in power I believe that many companies will leave the States. It won’t be worth doing business in a country where 10s of thousands have lost jobs and is so politically unstable. The economy won’t allow people to make these purchases. No country will want to buy.
Demanding stock holders eat his tariffs by their company profits & dividends diving isn't gonna cut it and these companies know their stocks will get dumped if they attempt to comply. Or is it the dealers who are expected to eat it? Are we in for lots of lot closures or what?
What do the republicans want. In response to tariffs, instead of raising prices the car companies are to what? Lay people off? Cut quality and standards?
My employer is a supplier for a few different car companies . They already started their reduction in work force as soon as Trump announced the tariffs .
It is so sad. I believe the trickle down effect will lead to over a million unemployed by the end of the year if the republicans continue to slash everything just for the sake of slashing with no real plan in place other than privatizing every aspect of the government
In the perfect world of his diseased mind, he might be thinking that they will absorb the tax in exchange for lowered income taxes. People who don't think things through probably file for bankruptcy a lot.
We are not a state. We are another country.
Sidenote: calling your regions "states" seems prophetic now, when one looks at the state your nation is in: state of chaos, state of poverty, state of corruption, state of ignorance, state of confusion, state of bankruptcy, etc
I, too, share a border with Canada! I've never been, and now, because of Dump, I'll probably never be able to go. That makes me soooo sad. I wanted to retire and eventually maybe end up in Canada's. Rump is terrible! #ElbowsUp
I live in Detroit- I grew up going to Windsor for pizza then coming back, watching fireworks on 4th of July, getting beer legally at 19- that life is gone and a fat, syphilitic idiot is the cause
AHAHAHAHAHAHA...corporations' only responsibility is to increase profit and value for shareholders. No company charter suggests they're in the business of making friends with Kool Aid.
That's like telling banks not to charge fees...meanwhile, the Senate just undid the rule CFPB had issued as to cap overdraft fees banks can charge. WTF is Trump on this? Still waiting for that credit card interest cap under 10% too, but we all know that was bait to the dumbfucks.
He's a dictator (I thot it was only for day 1, but maybe it's just one long day for the felon, certainly one long ass day for Americans) and now he's dictating corporate profits.
They think their going to make out in all this mess. US manufacturers years ago had a terrible reputation. It was worth spending extra money for a foreign car than it was for a US car that would fall apart after a few years. Personally, I think that is still part of the perception of a lot of people
So the party of small government is ok with Trump using threats and extortion on: free press, colleges, public schools, state governors, and now on private businesses and industries? I do not believe they can wake up from their denial coma. They are brain dead. Pull the plug!
Not to mention the extorting of Ukraine and the joining in of the Gaza genocide to get land for a trump hotel. And trying to get Canada and Greenland so he can steal their mineral wealth. Don't forget Panama. He wants to own that, too. He's drunk with power. And nothing good will come from it.
Hilarious! The auto industry is in trouble. Either they cut margins, if they even have that much headroom or they can't sell the over priced cars. They are all idiotic buffoons.

He asked Denmark and -forgive me- Sweden? for EGGS!
He is a fucking lunatic!
That’s going to happen right after Beyoncé messages me and asks if she needs to pick me up some steak whilst she’s in Lidl😂😂
Be interesting to see how China reacts - from next week tariff rate on Chinese built cars into the USA will be 172.5%

This is yet another reason that Musk having the DO[d]GE[y] role he has is a conflict of interest.
And bombing the rest of Europe.
Personally I'm hoping for everyone to go "HAHAHAHAHA no"
Time is of the essence. No time to waste.
They are probably all gleefully downsizing their homes and yachts as we speak.
Will not have any measurable effect on their lives, but will devastate their workers.
When he burns their portfolios and their generational wealth, they will start calling their pocket Senators.
Yeah right
I wonder who wakes up with a racehorse head in their bed first.
"Umm, nope."
"But Fox News keeps telling me that's how it works!"
It's revealing of the Goodwill. How not only the protected business will raise its prices, but it will raise it on things not subject to tariffs.
Translated: Great joke. Nah.
Can someone hand me a used condom?
That has for sure more content than this idiocy.
Anecdote yes, but found on road dead is a common saying.

There are just too many ways to describe him.

You glad you voted for him?
I believe even his Congress and SCOTUS cohorts are sick of him & want his to pass away.
Luckily, he's not looking well at all; his heart's about to give out, I believe.
Do you all know that only 4 cars are are among the most "American-made" so they won't be effected by the tariffs by Trump?
They are: Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X
Get it yet?
Bwahahahahaha!
Le grille?? What the hell is le grille?

American car and now there’s even more reason.

I guess Trump's degree in economics isn't helping
