Because "crime" isn't about crime, it's Lee Atwater-speak for racism. "The economy" isn't mostly about the economy, either, it's Lee Atwater-speak for "threats to my position in the hierarchy", which can be racism, sexism, *or* actual economic stress.

Also I think the economy is incredibly poorly understood because we focus on economic indicators that translate poorly to people's lived experiences. If you are part of the 40% of Americans who do not own stocks for example the stock market is less directly relevant.

I think for a number of Americans they based the economy on how they’re able to spend their $ on a daily basis. If their paycheck doesn’t go as far as it used to, then the economy, in their opinion, is in the shitter.

Contrary to what many online folks believe, many of them did hear the messaging that "the economy is great because stocks are up, unemployment is low; etc." but for them none of it matters because it did fuck all for their lives.

They don't have investments or retirement accounts so Wall Street gains mean nothing. They live in areas where new jobs are not really being created, so they're stuck with whatever they have and even if they had new jobs to potentially get hired for, most of those require retraining or new skills.

And they either cannot afford training/school, or if they can get it free through a program, they don't have time to do it because they have to work multiple cobbled together jobs just to have a place to live and food for them and their families because they either don't qualify for
