I think people keep forgetting that migrating in most cases is a trauma. If you've never had to navigate someplace where you don't speak the language it sucks. We need to break up migration into two buckets: people who are pushed and people who are pulled
A lot of people who migrate to the US are pushed. They can't make enough money at home. They're facing war, or some kind of persecution. They don't want to leave not really but home isn't safe anymore.
A much smaller subset of people are pulled. Their skills are in demand here and they could make way more money than at home (but they're not economically imperiled if they were to stay home), or they just prefer the lifestyle/ culture. Home is fine they just like it here more.
We are going to ignore the pulled camp for a second. The pushed though? They don't fucking want to be here and in fact it's often cheaper and less barbaric for us to do shit that makes it easier for them to stay home
I looked at this specifically through the lens of climate migration years ago. We were spending so much money detaining people when we could have just helped them adapt for way less. Catholic Charities features heavily in this story - we just gutted their funding
Yes and they think they won't mourn what they left behind. And they will. And it will be hard. This is silly but every time I live abroad I end with weird food fixations. I spent months missing boxed pancakes even though I hardly eat them. Just when I couldn't have them I really wanted them.
Honestly, I'm trying to - one of the ones being pushed for personal and economical reasons - and am in the early stages of it all, and it has been hell to just get to the basic standards (still a work in progress - apparently, having a job and degree isn't enough). Its HARD to immigrate.
Stop getting the local oligarchy to sign “free trade” agreements that force the country to accept highly subsidized agricultural products from the US that put the local farmers out of business and force them to find jobs … in the US agricultural sector.
Let's not forget the US role in gang violence. The gangs in Latin American and the Caribbean grew much stronger and more violent after Clinton started deporting people - often gang members - who had lived their whole lives in the US.
Dumped them in communities they hadn't seen since childhood, with no relevant skills, no way to make a living. But they did have connections with gangs in the US which could handle drug distribution, and supply weapons.
US demand for drugs, and the illegal export of weapons is a huge factor
In the 1990 coup attempt in Trinidad and Tobago a lot of the participants had bolt actions rifles, Enfields and the like. Purchased at gun shows in FL, smuggled to TT after the ATF "lost track" of the guns.
Now every gang has high-power weapons, AR-type, and the like. Because the US leaks guns
If America is fascist now, I can only imagine how much worse things are going to be when the planet is largely populated by climate refugees.
And unfortunately Putin wants to make climate change worse, and trump just canceled all climate change reduction policies.
Dark ol timeline.
I am in gun violence prevention work and something I keep on shouting from my Massachusetts rooftop: U.S. guns are driving the violence that’s causing people to flee. Including guns made right here in MA.
We made this. And then we penalize immigrants for fleeing the violence we helped create.
Yep, if I get time travel I’m goin to the 1970s to shut that down. Kill Hitler, meh, they’d just get another Hitler. But some folks might be very interested in how those decisions twisted the political hemisphere.

Don't ever assume why someone immigrated. Its rude af.

Seems to me that dumping non-members into gang-run prisons is a good way for gangs to recruit

U.S. foreign, economic, and military policy.

Reminder that "twenty years ago" is no longer 1980s
