It was called the Great War until WWII. Historians consider them one war with an interlude that created the evilness of WWII. The reparations that destroyed what was left of Germany after WWI is at the heart of WWII. Though WWII, unlike WWI, included the Pacific War agst the Japanese war machine
They didn't. They called it "The First World War" though, because their idea of "The World" was very eurocentric and they thought of it as the first war which involved the whole world.
they actually called it world war 2 until the second one started and they got really embarrassed about how small the original first one was in comparison
