Scundered seems like a good word to have in my vocabulary.
Can't imagine that I'll be talking about gypsies or Travellers very often, though. But still good to know what words to be careful with
Here from a place of unknowing. Do we expect the Americans to call them “Travellers”, though, or is there a term they would use over there instead? AFAIA it’s gypsies.
I have no first-hand experience with those particular people. There would be very few if any in my part of the country. But I have seen a documentary about "Gypsies" living in America and they were referred to as "Travellers." I think they were of Romanian descent, not Irish. I know it's complicated
You do 😂
For example
I’m going for a pint (pub for a beer) means a minimum of three.
I had a couple of pints doesn’t mean two, but at least five.
A few pints? Well it’s anyone’s guess 😇
You're the second to suggest this. I had to Google it to understand the reference. No American would ever understand it. We've never heard of the Hesperus
This is my favourite. But ‘in the horrors’ is also a good one but mainly pertains to hangovers. If I was sick for a while, I’d just say ‘I have a pain in me hole/hoop with all this shite’.
Comments
Also “knackered” without the “ed” is to gypsies what the N word is to black people.
(Aside for people in the know-gypsies is ok right? Historic? He won’t know Mincoir or Traveller)

Irish Travellers are not Gypsies. Gypsy is a term for Romani people, and many of those consider it to be a slur.

This whole album and their others too!
The Wreck of The Hesperus is a poem written by Longfellow, also American.
I feel like locale isn't the issue here.
Listen closely.
