Those aren't cartoons, or original stories. Making a book into a movie, or an animation into live action always sacrifices something. For cartoons, the art style and cartoon logic is a lot of the charm and is completely lost or doesn't translate to live action. Too much is lost, and nothing gained.

I doubt you had any problems with the animated beauty and the beast. Yet, the original la belle et la bête from 1946 was live action and had some very cool effects for the time to help tell the story (running film backwards to show candles lighting instead of extinguishing, for example).

It's not the same to create a different version of a story that already exists and give it its own way to tell that story, than to grab a piece of media that already exists and make it again, almost exactly the same, but "updated" in live action.

Is the Disney movie a copy of the 46's movie (I'm asking you, I didn't saw it)? Yes, both talk about the same tale, but they do it with the same beats? The same songs? The same style? Or do each do their own thing with the same tale?

I see your point about how belle et la bete 1946 and Disney 1989 are much different. Maybe live action Star Trek TOS vs Star Trek TAS is a better comparison.

Different casts and directors do the same play in different ways. They do put a little bit of themselves on it.

And it's not really the same thing. Plays must be done over and over. But a film can be seen exactly the same forever. So why "update it" if you are not going to do something different?

Technically yes? But if that's the only difference, it's not very meaningful.

Like Disney's Beauty and the Beast live action. There's some changes, but most of it it's the same, or referencing what already exists in another movie. At best it's the same experience with a somewhat different visual.

That's all well and good if these remakes weren't appealing to the nostalgia people have for those animations - reusing characters, songs, etc. it is pretty transparent. I don't disagree with your premise but I don't think it applies here

Star Trek as an example - lower decks gets way more wacky and zany with the material. It's still fundamentally a star Trek story but they take advantage of it being animation to tell some of the more fantastical sides of the world that they couldn't effectively do with TV sets

I'd say the singing and dancing animals demand it to be a cartoon. I've tried training meerkats to sing. They're not great at it!
