Stan Kelly is a satirical cartoonist for The Onion. The reason his work looks like "off-brand Garrison" is because it's supposed to, that's who he's (most heavily) mocking.
Like... "innocent" refers to lack of infidelity or something? If the wife was... idk running around... she'd have that other dude as a valentine... wise up
I know it's satire... but... Jesus, it does take two to tango, and there's plenty of ex-husbands and ex-wives who deserve a messy end to divorce proceedings. I know a guy, recently divorced. 1/2
His now ex-wife waited on him to get out of the hospital and for his doctor to clear him to go back to work after he had an accident before she slapped him for a divorce. It's not that he was abusive mind you. Good man, always helpful to others. She just got tired of marriage and decided to bail.2/2
Okay, but it just kind of look like a Ben Garrison strip rather than a satire of it. I guess that is the problem today. You cannot satire right-wing stuff because it is already ridiculous by itself.
It’s better if you understand that the Kelly character is part of the comic and he frequently uses his work to get out petty grievances. Like, the woman is clearly his ex-wife and this comic is him being VERY DIVORCED and trying to say “actually I’m GLAD we’re divorced hahaha *weep, sob, sob*”
I looked him up. I think the challenge he faces now is that there are literally right-wingers making jokes like this. His idea was how a ultra-conservative would make cartoons and make it over the top as that would be funny. Except now they are like that, so in a way it struggles to be satire.
Ah okay thanks. Makes more sense then. I realize I might have seen him make something about the bible before. It was also a bit odd. Like not immediately obvious what the humor was. I guess a sort of acquired taste.
It feels less about enjoyment and more about cringing.
It's purposefully cringe, but in a way that if you aren't aware it is beign so as a criticism, you can genuinely believe in a person that would publish stuff like this.
I can honestly say that this cracked me up. My father was a cartoonist and I grew up around cartoons, so I know exactly what this is satirizing, and it's very funny to me. You see this kind of unimaginative comic everywhere, and on top of that it's making fun of divorced men.
Reading up on it I started to get what the point is... but still not all that funny. Also not exactly a very accessible type of joke. I think the problem is that such jokes don't fly very well today compared to when he started is that the right got so extreme that this doesn't work as satire anymore
Why it’s turning, for this subject r, that when these jokes r made, laughing makes it seem like acceptable behavior. When it gets a laugh, people do it more and more, and women tend to b the butt of the joke, and we don’t like that anymore. We don’t HAVE to laugh at all men’s jokes now! 🤣🤣🥰🥰🥰
I guess the joke was meant to make fun of people who make jokes about women this way. But even if that was the point, it just isn't that funny, because that is exactly how MAGA are now. Look at the whole "Your body, my choice" sh*t that that little Neo Nazi sh*t pulled. That is their "jokes"
Satire is pointless when it's indistinguishable from what it's satirizing. You could post this on r/holup under memes about soldiers being cucks or white guys coming home to brown babies, the idiots wouldn't know the difference - so what's funny? Just the reminder we're surrounded by assholes?
"The reminder we're surrounded by assholes?" It's the opposite, it's the reminder that not everyone is an asshole and there are still people who think these kinds of things are ridiculous.
Besides, even if you weren't able to distinguish it, that doesn't mean it is indistinguishable.
And if it delighted you, cool. But my review of this piece, from an artist I often find does do good satire, is that it's not funny. It's too close to what it's mocking. For me it's a swing and a miss.
This thread is mostly people not getting it, and then people familiar with the artist explaining it's satire - not because it makes sense or because they got it or found it funny, but because it's affiliated with the onion and they know the artist. That's not good satire.
Crying with joy, woman exults over not receiving chocolates (verbal jabs about weight gain) and flowers (clear bid for sexual encounter). Heads out for "Galentine's Day" bash with friends.
No such thing as a “lonely broken down ex wife”. The amount of happiness we experience once we leave, lets us enjoy life the way it was intended. Men are unneeded now. Irrelevant.
Nah, my ex-wife is bitter and hateful. But then I'm the one who filed for divorce from her abusive ass. I got the kids (even my step-kid came with me) and since doctors make more than teachers I get child support and alimony.
So, I may be unneeded but she's the one who lost everything.
You want to hear the side of a woman who was verbally abusive to her husband and kids? The side of a woman who purposely slammed her car into a tree because her kids "wouldn't shut up"? The side of a woman who threatened to kill herself and her kids if I didn't drop the divorce?
Sounds like a wife and mother who needed more help than she got. Easy to judge what you grew to hate? Just asking for women who make too many mistakes in their lives how to be better with men that grew to hate them?
3 years after our 2nd child (3 total including step daughter) she demanded I quit my teaching job as child care took 60% of my pay. For the 15 years we were married I was a stay at home parent for 10. I did the cooking, the cleaning, the child care/appts, etc.
Valentines Day is a Corporate Holiday. Same with Easter, Forth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It shouldn't be, but it is. They profit off of all holidays. Debbie Downer out.

He's making fun of the conservatives that make shit like this
Btw I did get the joke, but I still don't find it all that funny. (not sure what the meme means though)
On its own, its not funny. In context as a piece of satire, its mildly more amusing.
Still just as devastating over twenty years later.

Wow.
Would you like more details?
Apparently it's a popular way to edit them to clown on him lmao
