What I absolutely love about university marketing is that it has made everywhere sound exactly the same, as if there weren’t individuals with different interests working in universities at all.

oh WE care about sustainability don’t know if you’ve heard of it but it’s when you talk about the environment while doing FA about environmental impacts you should try it
And FUTURE - future has to be in there somewhere. Also the exact same cohort of heavily airbrushed, healthy, wholesome, branded hoodie-wearing, laughing students.
I’m very excited for my university’s new initiative, Operation Delete Subject-Rich Modules, Make Education Bland Again, Now With Added CV-Writing Aided By AI.
We used to have 8 15-credit modules per year: wide range, perhaps too shallow. Then we moved to 6 20-credit ones. Now we’re moving to a 4 30-credit system. Fewer staff, less choice, less range, crucially fewer assessments and less effort for Timetabling etc.
I picked Cardiff as a mature undergrad because of the range of choice & no compulsories after year 1 - did a lot of 10 credits & some 20s in stuff I was really interested in (incl Welsh Writing in English.) I loved my degree - enjoyed every minute of it. It doesn't look anything like that any more 😢
I can’t see what any potential student would want to spend three years on non-specialist modules, especially when those teaching them are producing research in particular areas that they won’t get to share.
As an example of the uniformity in the system mentioned by the original poster, the University of #Edinburgh is currently implementing an initiative with exactly that description.
I was recently looking at a certain history department's website that was full of mission statements and visions and core interests and what have you, and I clicked on link after link and couldn't find a single actual researcher's name or topic.
Do not get me started on the powerpoint templates we are now meant to use for recruitment days. Come to the new and improved *Universitry*, were we do university things in building that are mostly glass! Also, there is a generic cafe and some people who have books!
‘A vibrant community of innovators shaping tomorrow’s leaders…’ aka every university website ever. It’s like they fed all their mission statements into an algorithm designed to erase any trace of personality.
There is a medical ware catalogue that comes to my pharmacy and it spreads its sales throughout a whole ass comic book. It's weird and fun and it gets us to flip through it when we'd otherwise toss it into the trash unread.
we here at collectivided U share this exact vision, and know how to leverage it to our advantage in such a competitive research environment. We have teams of industry leasing and diverse researchers standing by under literal lock and key. $5 per yumyum, feeding time for our big name scientists is 12
