Yep, and we do a disservice to women by pretending this isn’t true. I wasn’t offered a paracervical block the first time and apparently they thought it would be better if they didn’t warn me that it would hurt like hell. The second time my doctor was shocked that they didn’t offer the block.

It was definitely painful, but I had a block done, medication, and additional pain management. For me, a really awful painful day is honestly worth not having to think about things for 5>8 years. Also, it's been the only hormone management that doesn't trigger my bipolar disorder.

Yup. I also add misoptostol cervical softening pills for 3 days, take 800mg ibuprofen 1 hr before and paracervical block AND WAIT 15-20 MINUTES for it to really kick in

I had 2 insertions. One in the 80s (CU-7) and the other in the 90s (Mirena). My Dr said “this might be a little uncomfortable” but neither one hurt. My sister had Mirena and said it hurt like hell, so go figure. I had 3 deliveries by 1985 and she never had kids, so maybe it was that.

I've had them before and after having a kid, and neither were very painful for me. I think it just depends on the person, and possibly where in their menstrual cycle they are.

it also depends on whether or not they’ve delivered babies before (those of us who haven’t often have smaller cervixes). but the point is just that there’s no reason to risk the pain — the doctor should do the block as a matter of routine

Yeah, agreed, but I'm just saying that I got one before and after delivering a baby, and that didn't seem to matter at all for me. But erring on the side of avoiding pain would be ideal!

I can testify to the pain. Then, horrific periods for 3 months. Went back to have it removed and the dr. asked if I was sure because I couldn't get another. Oh yes!

Funny note: before I got it, every woman I met who had one sang its praises. Afterwards, only ran into women who hated it.

Yes, copper 7. It was at a clinic over in the Castro, and I didn't question why I couldn't get another because there was no way I wanted another one.
Boy, the birth control issues I had were never-ending.

I got Mirena and bled every two weeks, for 18 months, with more pain than when I was on oral contraceptive. Eventually got it removed and it took my body a few months to get back on track. To each their own i suppose. Also yes to pain management!! It is NOT just a pinch!

I have the redhead gene (you don't have to be redhead), which makes you a slow reactor to the numbing medication. If you think you have it, a make sure your doctor is prepared to wait twice as long and use twice as much! Same deal for dental work.

Bottom line, it shouldn't hurt that bad! It was definitely bearable and very brief, and then you don't have to think about for years. Definitely worth the trouble.

I got mine so long ago that I really have no memory of it being painful. I have a good memory for that sort of thing so I have to think it wasn’t that bad (for me.)

But so worth it. Young women, take control of your bodies. You’ll thank us.

Easier said than done when you have Kaiser as your insurance… but the pain from IUD insertion is real, the last one I had was so painful I nearly passed out from the pain and had to stay in the room for a good 20-30 minutes until I could stand up without getting dizzy… this was a good 10 years ago

And if you need to find a new practice find a practice with a menopausal specialist so when you hit perimenopause/menopause you will not have to fight your doc for HRT.
