Everybody always waits for magical diplomatic immunity to stand up for what's right. The real courage is to stand up for what's right, knowing that you're vulnerable to the consequences of doing so. Maybe that courage is what the world needs to see right now for hope and resistance to spread. 🤷‍♂️

I was thinking for some time if the US tried to annex Canada I would fight, but now I think I would just leave and go to asia. I'd rather deal with chinese hegemony. Whats left to fight for here? Education is crumbling, human rights are crumbling. Its just a continent of dumbasses.

I remember when I was told by members of my school's diversity committee that the school emphatically could not make statements condemning Mike Brown's death. Then they made a statement about George Floyd. I'm still waiting for their Palestine statement.

Agreed. But it is a reason - and one that can be mitigated, to some extent, by the solidarity of peers. To not be alone (or to leave others to be alone). The first battle the right one was to allow the opposition to fragment and to unite its own side despite apparently fundamental differences.

Should add I know very little about the nature of academic tenure in the US so obviously can't speak with any authority on the pressures of an academic career. Just frustrated at the right's ability to unite against the left's ability to fragment..

Agree. I heard countless people say that and I got to the point when I found it more irritating than just saying "I don't care, I will not speak up"
