The Eron breakup is a great point. There is also the story of how people like Steve Bannon saw how they could manipulate certain gamers to follow certain talking points. The beginning of this video talks about it and other bad actors in the space.
The dumbest part? Whether the story was true or not is irrelevant. Barely known indie dev with a tiny game and a mid tier journalist got dragged for the sins of IGNs and EAs.
