There's lots of questionable depictions in old cartoons. Some of the ones I adored as a kid now cause me to wince, but I've never been a fan of retroactive censorship. Rightly or wrongly, we were who we were, and those attitudes, however much we may now disagree with them, reflect our past.

When the sprog was pre-school, all the episodes were available on Prime so we gave them a go, thinking she'd love them. We quickly turned it off when we realised just how violent they are. Very much of its time.

"Tom and Jerry" was, according to Wikipedia, a phrase applied to lairy young men in Georgian/Victorian London. It's not entirely clear whether either of these connections has any bearing on how, or why, they were named.
