I meant the northern United States of course. I’ve heard it said in the South. But not New England or NJ where they always say shovel the sidewalk.

Depends whether it's fallen snow or ice. SK seems to be dealing with more ice than we used to. That requires scraping.

Yeah, shoveling and scraping are two separate tasks, packed snow and ice that have adhered to the sidewalk can't just be shoveled.
