πWhat's happening to Europe's car industry is one of the biggest stories in the world right now, & prob the biggest story of next year too.
A slow motion implosion driven by multiple factors (esp Chinese competition).

1. The shift from conventional engines to batteries is a DISRUPTIVE innovation. The kind of thing Clay Christensen wrote about.
This is a MASSIVE deal...
An assembly of HUNDREDS of pieces of metal, all perfectly honed to turn fuel into motion.
Making these things is REALLY hard. Which is why:
a) that's where most of the value/jobs are
b) other countries have struggled to compete making them
Because for decades China couldn't make them well enough.
But here's the critical bit. Electric cars don't have engines. Motors are far simpler to make. Fewer moving parts. More commoditised. Less value
And this is disastrous for Europe.
Because a) we don't make many batteries and b) making batteries is a v v different skill to making engines
To make batteries you need chemical engineers. Not mechanical engineers
By the time you're competing it's invariably too late. This is where we are NOW with cars

Those advocating tariffs to prevent the "invasion" of cheaper EVs & batteries look increasingly like modern day Canutes trying to hold back the tide
The system in the UK needs reform, renewables are the way to go.
I understand if I am a car manufacturer I pay more to run my plant in the UK than Germany.
I don't understand if it costs energy companies more to produce but they are less regulated
