Say what type of map it is (e.g. Choropleth). It would aid students in learning key words and make mapping language as familiar as weather and politics.

Great suggestion here on using legend for histograms. Requires clarification on whether it’s discrete count (# of countries) or capita.

Please, add a zoom button. Yes, now you can choose the continents, but maybe I'm interested in looking at Mediterranean or Caribbean countries and now I can't get there. And, by the way, lots of very difficult to click small countries in both zones ;¬)

A really small improvement would be to change the 0 in the bottom end of the first category. As this is a log scale, 0 is infinitely many categories down. The natural bottom for the category would be down to 500. I presume that would include all countries (if not, you really need another category).

Using 500 here lets the viewer know that this bucket is the same size as the others and so there aren't countries that are multiple halvings smaller than 1000, while 0 doesn't.

Relatedly, I'd probably include a 100,000–200,000 category as there are 5 countries in it and I'm not sure what the objective justification for lumping them in with the 50,000–100,000 countries would be.
That said, all this is avoided with continuous colour...

I've always felt it would be better if the colours on the map were done continuously rather than in buckets. The buckets clearly lose information density (vis Tufte) and I don't think their ability to more canonically check which bucket a country is in justifies that loss.

e.g. with buckets you might have two nearby countries A & B shown the same despite B being 2.4x richer, and their neighbour (C) being in a different colour, despite being only 1.1x richer than B. Here the buckets highlight the smaller difference and confuse, while continuous colour is always right.

I think there is even less reason to use bucketed colours for online versions as then you could show the value for a country when you tap on it or mouse-over it.
