I like Kathy Burke's Connie too (though again, the idea they'd let her have a souvenir box complete with photos of everyone is ludicrous). But mostly I agree, it was bad, and suffered from having such a great TV adaption to be compared unfavourably with. - ThreadSky

Ok, actually didn’t completely hate it on rewatch. Everyone seemed very slightly miscast, except Kathy Burke, but there were some genuinely good scenes, as you said, Aidan. And I guess because it was made 30 years later, it really leant in to the period features.

Yeah, I also have the feeling about widespread miscasting. I can't quite put my finger on it though, which is puzzling. There's no fault in Mark Strong or Colin Firth or Benedict Cumberbatch, for example, that I could articulate, but none of their performances quite worked for me.

Yeah, I think the comparison is just too stark. And also sort of made you wonder why it needed to be done? I never really understand that remaking of masterpieces. There was a ghastly remake of Psycho when I was in my twenties, I think, and I just couldn't fathom why you'd set yourself up to fail.

I seem to remember it getting tonnes of the critical praise at the time but just felt it was horribly miscast. (Toby Esterhase was pretty egregious.)

Perhaps I’m responding more to the writing than the casting; I *completely* agree with you about that scene. There’s no way that character could do the stuff Toby does in the subsequent novels.

Right, exactly. No spoilers, but I *really* liked Harkaway's Toby, partly because he feels so true to the character in the later novels, and because it fits well with George's highly ambivalent relationship to him in TTSS and later.
