The MIBiG data standard provides a framework for organizing experimental data on biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), making it both human- and machine-readable. Launched in 2015, the MIBiG repository has grown organically and now includes bioactivity and other data as well. (2/8)

In January 2024, 398 researchers signed up to contribute to MIBiG 4.0 after a call for participation on social media. This overwhelming interest led us to develop a new model for coordinating community involvement. For more details, check out the paper. (3/8)

Over 8 hackathons, 267 contributors made 8304 edits, creating 557 new entries and modifying 590 existing ones. They added 7677 references and linked to new databases like MITE and CyanoMetDB. We estimate that over 4000 person-hours were volunteered! (4/8)

What’s new in MIBiG 4.0? We’ve introduced a new review model, where newly submitted or edited entries are checked by volunteer reviewers to ensure high data quality. We’ve also added a “quality” rating based on the comprehensiveness of entries. (5/8)

We’ve also enhanced the biosynthesis information, including a new option to describe alternative “biosynthetic paths” a BGC can take to produce multiple products. The bioactivity data has undergone a substantial overhaul and now supports quantitative data. (6/8)

Encouraged by the interest of the community, we’ve begun developing a “rolling release” model for MIBiG, where curation happens continuously. Bear with us as we prepare the infrastructure to support this ongoing community effort. (7/8)

Would it be possible to add URL redirects for non-versioned BGCs? Would help un-break old links as well

would redirects to the latest BGC0000002 version
