I know many of us are devastated by the election result. Like many of you I got about 3-4 hours of sleep last night. And I am sure there are some who have concerns about what the impact may be on them personally. Please remember we will do everything in our power to support you.
Work with your communities mental health locations to see about having someone there available to your staff. Though, this can be hard for them to do as they are usually swamped getting into this time of year because of the holidays.
I'm leaving early today so I can go on a long bike ride to clear my head. I'm sure that would probably help a lot of people, though just giving everybody leave because one side lost an election might be seen as inappropriately partisan.
I know a lot of Americans worried about their disability benefits today, and about their jobs, and being able to keep their heads above water. Easing the financial pressure would be HUGE for those people.
Also, offer people the chance to work from home if they need to.
I’m trying to put together resource lists—Civil rights law, cultural historians.
Environmental protection,
Immigration resources, mutual aid, digital operational security, queer and trans resources, health insurance help
I’d like to see leaders acknowledge that folks may be deeply affected by election results. Give people space and time to process. In higher ed, it’s often no response due to fear of crossing an ambiguous line defined by state politics or “push ahead, for the children!”, which contributes to burnout.
I’m late to this, but I’m sure there will be more need. Our leadership was very flex with last min time off and wfh if needed for space & reiterated to all the importance of taking mental health days. They also held a stress resilience seminar (over zoom) which was actually really well done.
Firstly:
Don’t expect peak performance. Hell - be ok if people need to leave early or call in.
Provide mh resources and info about civil rights orgs and other orgs helping people rn.
Today and every day, be extra aware of bullying and bigotry - deal with it immediately and decisively.
Send people home and tell them to prepare for the worst. Unless a miracle happens, Trump takes office on January 20, and Mike Johnson will give him everything he wants.
But there will be plenty of jobs in the concentration camps.
I told my entire team during the morning stand up that if anyone needed a mental health day(s) to get anything critical covered, then submit the request and I’d approve, no questions asked.

Doing my best not to hide back in my little office and to be out there helping them …and flashing a fake smile to customers.

Probably the same for elsewhere.
Also remind yourselves that Trump is old and his followers stupid. The chaos will be painful; but it will end.
Project 2025 is designed to poison the well and salt the earth
We are gonna have to really work this time... on what, precisely, it remains to be seen
