please if we're going to kill random browsers, kill Safari instead. I don't want to deal with its dev tools or foot-dragging on web standards compared to other browsers
Glad I don't use chrome anymore. It's a resource hog on most computers. The only place I use it is on my phone, which is an android device but not on my laptop.
You are aware that Google still haven’t remotely broken up and barely fined, right? Look, I am all for antitrust. These for decades long lawsuits (last one was Microsoft). The stance of administration is important. Where did Barr go!? lol.
I swear these people are so dumb. That’s the only part of the Google monopoly that actually has competitors. Why don’t they force them to sell YouTube?
I dont follow this deeply. But it seems to me that Google / Alphabet is being punished for having a better product. Between Firefox, Safari and Edge/IE there's certainly competition.
Isn't the entire reason they let Firefox exist and quietly support them financially so that they can get around these lawsuits by pointing to Firefox and saying "we aren't a monopoly, this other browser exists too"?
Chromium is an open-source project which primarily is funded by Google. Without Google Chrome there will be few contributors to Chromium (certainly not from Google). If someone takes over Google Chrome and rebrands it they will do far worse things to it.
I'm all for a breakup - this isn't it though.
What does this mean for all those companies who have set up their systems using chrome if say the buyer is an unhinged egotistical billionaire who will seek to destroy it with mis and disinformation?
I have my Google Calendar, Keep, Photos, and Tasks all integrated into my Chrome browser. As well as add-ons like my LastPass in it. So DOJ never considered people that DON'T want to split all that functionality up?
no, whoever buys it will have to recoup their costs of buying it somehow and chrome is already a huge net cost for google (only an asset for how it promotes their other products), so the new owners will likely enshittify it even more
So worst case scenario chrome's quality degrades and people have to switch to browsers not controlled by the company that also dominates online search and ads? I'd take it!
and we’d only have one maintained open source browser left. or maybe zero, if google no longer supports mozilla, since they’d not be allowed to pay for being the default search engine
also, what would happen to all the google engineers who currently work on chromium? would they be included in the sale? if not, how on earth would anyone be able to get engineers who deeply understand the codebase to maintain it?
I’d much rather Chromium supposedly no trackers from Google and it’s open source but overall I think it’s good that they’re being forced to sell Chrome

There are way more browsers than you realize. There is no reason anyone should feel beholden to Google or their browser.
