Trying????????? Wish this story came out in January when everyone knew (from our seventh grade civics class) what could happen with Trumps actions (starting on day one) stealing Congressional power and deleting checks & bal, while little to nothing on usurping such powers was said in legacy press.
2025 will go down in history as when the social experiment called the “United States of AMERICA” crashed due to the most self-righteous incompetent leadership ever voted in by the experiment’s participants.
In this case we need to give all credits to religious people, regardless their religion. They are so committed to follow their religion's rules, even when those rules are hard for them.
Governance is not unresponsive because of the checks and balances of its structure, it is because of the laws passed by congress, enforced by the executive and adjudicated by the judiciary. Change the laws, not the balance of power.
Laws without enforcement is moot. They are useless if no one even know they were violated, or no one can take the criminal in, or no one has the power and wherewithal to penalize the criminal.
That applies as much to individual citizens as to companies.
If only we had a way of knowing what happened in other past dictatorships in Europe, Asia, Latin America. And right now in Turkey.
Sooner or later the door knock gets closer to home.
It's hard to go back because the people in power are the ones who benefit. Just like the ones who've accumulated mega-wealth gain power that way and aren't going to give it back easily.
So “legal” decisions will now be decided upon who sits at the resolute desk. Lawyers won’t be necessary to argue cases. No need for law school. Just total loyalty to the authoritarian. So now it becomes a contest. Instead of expensive courthouses we should try jousting or sword fighting.
when this is the average Republican online these days, we have completely lost the plot. only once the destruction of these checks & balances and his destructive policies affect everyone (not just to “own the libs”) is when they’ll realize they’re fucked. but it’ll be far too late.
