I feel very strongly that this weird abomination is more fun and interesting, and will last longer in the cultural Zeitgeist, than any "genuine Minecraft movie" about block people building things could ever be
Yeaaah, but not necessarily in the way WB would like it to. I mean, I don't think they're after ridicule and notoriety. It will be relegated to reaction GIFs and people going "Hey, remember when Jack Black was Steve Minecraft? Man, that was stupid as hell."
I'm going to go out on a limb and propose that their target market is all children of any race or gender. Bit hard to encompass all that in a single kid.
I recently worked in a marketing department, and I'll gently suggest that some marketing departments are creatively lazy, both in the sense of making kinda mid work and in the sense of innovating new ways to not work at all. One pertinent example: actively avoiding defining target markets.
