fwiw, in archaeology (other than continuing in academia) this definitely did not seem to be the case. although the state school my partner and I attended had a fair bit of prestige in the field, until a new chair kind of gutshot it towards the end of our time there

It varies field by field, but I find that a lot of state schools have been doing better at getting their students internships/experience which can help in the job market, at least with humanities related stuff.

I went to a T20 school and now teach at a state school and I hate to say it but the education we offer here is not as good as the one I had. We still do good work, improve students lives compared to not going to college and all, but like it's not the same.

I think the synthesis here is that:
1) going to college at all makes more of a difference than the gap between going to a state college and going to an ivy league school
2) there *is* a (meaningful!) difference and you should incorporate that into your decision making

the professors on some level are worse teachers at T20s imo, but the students base abilities at T20s and the expectations often means more interesting material gets covered in classes at T20s

I think that really just depends on the first couple of jobs you get coming out of college. I went to a state school no one knows about and that worked very well for me, but that's because I went into a career where having a degree was more important than the networking.

as a state school guy, I thought going to a state school worked fine, but my understanding is that tech has a fairly uniquely low level of giving a shit about alma matter
