Judging by the response, I think y'all will be interested in the next LGR episode!
The SereneScreen Aquarium screensaver (really a series of screensavers) has almost 40 years of history behind it, going back to the Commodore 64 and Amiga. Its development and evolution are fascinating so stay tuned!
Wow -- what an incredibly well-researched article. I can't find a single thing that isn't spot-on accurate. You reminded me of things that even I had forgotten!
@lgr-yt.bsky.social & @jdsachs.bsky.social I rebought this Screensaver one day prior to your review LGR, for my brand new PC, a custom built Ryzen 7 3800X3D with an NVidia 4080 Super. - True story.
Fun fact: I did use Boot camp to run Windows 7 because the Marine Aquarium Windows version is superior. It went the extra mile to have both so I could compare, of course. Ah rabbit holes. Good times.
That was fantastic. I didn't think I'd be so into a screensaver! Did you ever try MOPy Fish? That was my favourite (and free!) screensaver back in the day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOPy_fish
In 1995, the NEC Fish Club was created for hotels and restaurants. It provided a "virtual" fish tank using a 32" Sony HDVS CRT and a Sony HIL-C2NE laserdisc player inside an industrial fish tank design, making the fish displayed via Hi-Vision (HD) video look incredibly lifelike.
I'm fairly certain that I had a demo version of this one around '99-2000 when I built my first PC. One of the shops I bought parts from had it running on all the PCs in their showroom.
The aquarium screensaver goes all the way back to these days? (points to Y2K-ignorant man)
Come to think of it, have you ever done a video on 'Little Computer People'? Might be interesting to cover in the future. (Also, if you want a laugh, play anagrams with him. Sometimes he chooses odd words.)
I had an iMac that used that screensaver, it was in my youngest kid's room as his 'aquarium' making a Bondi Blue 10 year old (at that time) iMac a new purpose
the OG animation was probably rendered at 4:3, and when Roku recreated or up-scaled it, they had to convert it to HD which is 16:9. you have two options with that conversion: black bars, or zoom-and-crop.
That and they added the moray. And there's a couple of depth map failures where the fish clip through the coral just a little bit. I spent a whole lot of time seeing that Roku animation
Yeah, I confuse the hell out of voice dictation. Ever since they started leaning heavily on AI it assumes way too many things about my technical versus non-technical posts.
Nice, got exactly that in the Galu Beach Lagoon 1500m away.
My favourite one is the mostly blue, vertically striped one. Never stopped snorkeling without spotting this Fella!
I had that. The creator of that gave it to Microsoft, and Microsoft started charging for more fish. He took it back. I still have a pirated copy. Loads on W7.
Beautiful! Sometimes I miss the magic of an aquarium, and then I recall the childhood drudgery of moving the fish in order to clean their tank, and how slimy the pretty coloured rocks in there got. 🐠🐟
Seeing this as I scrolled felt like I took psychic damage. Haven't seen this since my grandmother installed a bunch of screensaver packs that were filled with malware.
BlueSky algorithms seem to be working - been following your channel for over 7 years now, and you’re one of the first posts showing up on my feed here as soon as I made my account!
I never really got into the whole "fish screensaver" thing but Really Slick Screensavers was something I absolutely loved. Mostly Skyrocket, Flux and Microcosm were my three favorites out of the bunch. We should bring screensavers back.
I hope you continue to use Bluesky! I missed your posts from the other platform but I couldn’t stay there. Thanks for being amazing, Clint! Look forward to your next video.

I'm sure the positive press that that Pixar movie got helped sales as well.
It runs ☆beautifully☆.
Your artwork is legendary and it was a pleasure diving into the timeless Marine Aquarium series.
My son loves his new aquarium and this late 2013 iMac its new purpose!
It’s oddly nostalgic.

Saving it now!
Good thing Ellen Degeneres ain't voicing that fish lol

A 10 hour YouTube video would be awesome

It's also built into every Roku
I think they eventually had a Frys variant made that had the logo in the background and the mascot Chipy as part of the aquarium decor.
The amount of time I’d watch it zoned out while trying to do homework at his desk
Its why after a while I was forbidden to do homework at his desk lol.
We love our desktop fishes
lol... I used to rock that back in the day.
Good times. Thanks for sharing.
Love these fish, i wanna be able to come back to it when needed 🥰
