My son’s district switched to Fundations (a science of reading based curriculum) this year. I was asking him how class was going and he said:
I hate it. We used to read books and novels and now all we do is talk about what sounds letters make. I just want to have fun reading.

My son still reads. He reads a LOT. He’s a great reader. He just hates doing 30 minutes of phonics a day when he could be reading instead.
It was so NOT fun or interesting, and we tried so many things to make it more fun.
I agree with your point about reading “at their level”. To me, there’s no such thing as a reading level.
And 3rd grade should be focused on morphology.
If it’s “boring”, that’s on the kid or the teacher. There’s zero reason why they aren’t reading engaging text.
Nah. And the teachers are just following the curriculum. It’s ok to say the program is boring. It’s an opinion and not everyone has to agree with yours.
I’m not saying everyone has to agree with my opinion, just as not everyone has to agree with yours.
Got a simple b-day card for my great nephew’s 7th b-day and he couldn’t read it. 💁🏻♂️
One thing I would suggest is that even great readers really do benefit from SOME more work with phonics...
In the end I know he’ll be fine. He loves reading and reads a lot at home. He’s currently reading the Martian at home with me and it’s great to see him enjoy it so much
And I'm not saying he needs 30 minutes a day of it! I'm just saying there IS a reason to continue some good phonics, even with proficient younger readers.
The problem is the ways these laws are written encourage the adoption of boxed curriculum which doesn’t always align with research or student need
In schools that are collecting reliable/valid data on each kid, and that are staffed with admin & teachers that have a thorough knowledge of how kids learn to read, access
If any of those ingredients are missing, tho, you get haphazard, patchwork instruction, and kids suffer.
