This foreign language department used to put out these books for free at my uni --and once in a while I would take them for the covers. I never even knew what language it was. The covers were amazing. (Nobody ever wanted them.)
What, that involuntary biological function all humans share that uses our cultivated life experience to subconsciously determines whether a human being is a threat before we even have a chance to consciously process it?
I've noticed that with sci-fi and fantasy books from the 70s to 90s, the uglier the cover, the better the story inside. Not so much for more recent books.
True true. But there's the deception angle to consider. Sometimes a bad book will try to squeeze its way into someone's hands by having an awesome cover.
I've found this really holds true for movie cover posters too
if the creators can't be fucked making a cover that shows -something- about the vibe of the content, it means they don't care enough about the content (so why should I?)
