Have you been to Smithfield recently? Grubby, surrounded by traffic jams, no rail links, wholesale only, probably not the ideal location for further distribution. Closure has been on the cards for years, but I did think there would be a new location like Nine Elms for Covent Garden.
I thought you might say this, as a regular foodie tourist when visiting my in-laws, this seems like a mad decision, ripping at what makes a city a community. So sad… surely someone will protest?
IKR … just discussing this with a couple of English friends who are over for dinner… devastated 🥺 same has happened to their home village markets. Used to be a roaring community hub, now 🤷♀️
Markets were disproportionately affected by the lockdown. Our ancient local one hasn't recovered; it is a shadow of its former self. And now this. It's a sentinel for the demise of markets everywhere
Their vibe (for want of a better word) is not replicable. You don't have to buy or sell at a market to benefit from its effects. Personally, Wednesdays hit differently because the local market is open. It's a feeling...a cultural biorhythm
If/when you visit we do have a few notable city based markets: Vic and Prahran markets in Melbourne, Northside, EQ, Paddy’s in Sydney, Central Markets Adelaide and more listed by https://farmersmarkets.org.au/
It really is so sad. On the one hand I'm glad I got to see (and use) the markets, but it's such a shame that they've been around for centuries and that we'll see them go.
It’s happening all over the uk. Traditional markets with a sense of community being replaced by plastic wrap supermarkets. Sad what some see as progress
