Once, my mom asked me what a nonbinary person was after seeing someone she labeled as androgynous since she'd heard the term recently. After I explained it to her, she told me she didn't fully get it because she "was born in another time" but was still happy to learn about it

Something I have to remind myself of (and examine in my own language) is that some of these silly phrases and just-ignore attitudes come from a time when they were absolutely vital to protecting the community. When acknowledging outright could mean anything from job loss to death for that person

I'm reminded of the time when an older gentleman struck up a conversation with me at a bar bragging about how he voted for McGovern in '72 and then asked "have you seen trannys these days? They're amazing! They're even better than women!" A younger guy then asked me if had any coke. Interesting bar.
