AND (because this is a day filled with excitement), happy 88th anniversary of the birth of Czech architect Jan Kaplický, co-creator of the Media Centre at Lord’s and the Birmingham Selfridges, but tragically not this, which was never... ~ahem~ erected
One final footnote. The replies on this page suggest a man called Gary Dawkes was responsible for the jubremony, but doesn’t explain the exact circumstances (long lunch for the typesetter etc)
It would have to have been VERY liquid. I don't know enough about how newspaper layout worked in the 70s. I can sort of understand how some paragraphs from another story might end up somewhere else, but it's hard to understand how the other errors happened. Fascinating!
Has anyone ever done an oral history of this article? I want to know everything about how it happened, who was responsible, what their reaction was, and how both the Jubilee fund and the footballers felt about it
The journalist, the late Gary Dawkes, said in that link that it was “1978 when I was a young reporter on the Peterborough Standard which began using new OCR technology” which is optical character recognition- which explains a lot!!
In the late 1980s, an eminent academic I know was giving a really important formal speech; moments beforehand he used “change all” to reinstate the full words where he had used abbreviations whilst typing… 1/
I think there was some degree of computerisation around then- when was Wapping, remember the huge union dispute? The Tines, iirc…
But I was going by the comment by the late journalist who wrote it, that it was when they had just started using OCR…
We had to pay MGN (I think) for permission to reproduce their copy. Worth it, though, for a beautiful exampke of what The Simpsons’ writers call ‘a ten percenter’.
