❗️The 🇨🇦Canadian province of Nova Scotia has ordered the removal of 🇺🇸American alcohol from store shelves and doubled tolls for commercial vehicles entering from the United States.

To be honest, although there will certainly be some people who are sad about particular wines or other alcohol products, American beer isn’t *hugely* popular here. (I’m being Canadian polite.) So you’re probably OK … in terms of the beer industry.
To clarify, the majority of my comment was poking fun at a long running joke between Canadian and American beers, it wasn’t comparing Canadian and American wines.
So while I mentioned wine and other spirits in passing, that wasn’t the point of the comment.
Item one, I wasn’t talking about wine.
Item two, thankfully, Canada has two good wine regions of our own, and we will continue to import wine from other parts of the world.
If you meant to reply to someone else who was suggesting that the tariffs are predominantly targeting products
… from states that support the GOP, that doesn’t change how wine, beer, and spirits are lumped together under Canadian alcohol legislation related to import/export.
I suspect there are ways to work in exceptions, but it takes more time than a single announcement.
That’s at the federal level of the tariffs. A lot of people are responding to the decisions at the provincial/territorial level about what is going to be available for sale at the provincially controlled distribution points. Those choices aren’t being made by the federal government.
Bud Light is the world's best selling light beer, bud. It is a top 5 seller in every province. Coors is right up there, too. Hell, Budweiser is the most popular beer in Manitoba.
… is that in general Canadians tend to be fairly regional about their beer preferences, and depending where you are in the country, there’s a wide variety of international and domestic beer choices available.
In the UK during the run up to Christmas the only beers that are left on the shelf for any time are the likes of Coors and Budweiser, every other nationality of beer is consumed happily American beer is utterly pointless
This is something I’ve heard from lots of people, and I will take the word of the Pierre drinkers responding here that there are strong opinions in both camps.
I wonder if some of the product left on shelves is in part of function of breadth of distribution as well as product appeal.
There are a lot of US craft beers that are popular here (Aust), but tbh if they weren’t available it’s only going to be a good thing for our local craft beer industry.
I was thinking that this may be a situation where more people, probably in the USA, Canada and other countries, actually end up encountering domestic products in a variety of different areas that they may not otherwise have considered, and perhaps find some new faves.
Any market for any product always has a low cost option that is relatively low quality.
There are always also the inevitable mediocre quality that are highly overpriced, and the occasional gem that is low priced but much better quality than you would anticipate.
Your personal opinion is of alcohol is your prerogative, but it remains a massive profit industry around the world. Enough so that it is, in a trade war, an effective weapon in the arsenal.
I don’t drink at all, so it doesn’t impact me directly, but I don’t underestimate its influence.
Donald Trump has officially declared through an executive order that everyone on Earth is transgender. He signed an executive order stating that sex is determined at conception. HOWEVER, every person on Earth develops sex at about one month AFTER conception. We ALL change gender at one month.
across the country billions of dollars of alcohol are being removed, you dont hit Canada and not pay a price. Not only will there be tariffs but Canada will not be selling american products at all. THAT is how you deal with a trump.
In Canada, syrups must be made exclusively from maple sap to qualify as maple syrup and must also be at least 66 per cent sugar. In the United States, a syrup must be made almost entirely from maple sap to be labelled as "maple"
All well & good, but our liquor isn’t that great anyway. Now do it with Tesla and Starlink and you’ll be really doing something! Every country should be standing up against #FFOTUS & #PresidentMusk!
Good. Make it hurt. Canada is our ally, and Trump is being a bully. Wait till businesses in my state o' Maine feel the pain of lack of tourism. Canadians are our biggest tourist dollars in many areas.
Most of the money comes from them staying at beachside spots, restaurants, and shopping.
Half the people in FL during the winter are Canadian. I hope they don't return until the rapist & felon is gone for good. But unfortunately, the ones I've met think he's great. Maybe that will change now.
It's going to be a loooooong time before I set foot in the usa again.
I normally vacation and go to concerts in the USA , even if tariffs were lifted tomorrow, the blatant betrayal has happened, trust and respect is lost.
Well between this idiotic tariff increase and our current exchange rate (roughly 60 cents on the dollar) guaranteed you won’t see many of us Canadians venturing South. Sad reality we share the same continent and are divided by idiots
We summer in St Andrews and normally go across ~weekly to Calais and/or Bangor for groceries, gas, shopping, entertainment, etc., while there. But like the last time he was in, we are done and won’t be back until he’s gone…
I agree with thoughtful leaders
I'm angry. I want to rile up everybody in the US.
But I don't want the kill anyone.
Your leadership counts on our humanity to draw out this war.
I'd close the border and send US diplomats packing.
Close our airspace. Shut coastal passages to US ships.
So much more.
It's sad really. I was planning a bucket list motorcycle ride down the east coast. Would have dropped likely a cpl thousand on food, gas and lodging. Changed my route and will now stay in Canada. I'm just one. I wonder how many more will change their plans.
Ford is obsessed with liquor, so it’s not surprising this is his response. I’m not against it, but am very much looking forward to voting his lying, scheming, grifting ass out of office very soon.
Doug Ford is playing Canadians just like Donald Trump played Americans. Listen to this interview where Doug Ford swears his eternal total devotion to Donald Trump.
Many years ago I saw a print in the Library of Congress of two British soldiers burning down the building’s predecessor. My smile was diplomatically discreet.
No, I am American, and I appreciate Canada doing something because our own government isn't. The MAGAs party followers won't wake up until it hurts them personally.
Americans support Canada 🇨🇦 #canadafightingfascism
After supporting UA for the past 3 years with fundraisers, donating money, buying UA clothes, decaling my truck... I never ever would have thought we (Canada) would have become news for you, sadly.
Ontario has also ordered all US alcohol, and BC said everything from Red States removed.
Trump tanked the stock and crypto market. America is in big trouble. This is more chaos than Biden with radical government changes and cuts and tariffs and corruption
There is only one toll road in the province (plus 2 bridges), and I know of no Canadians who prefer American beer over our own. The popular joke about American beer is that it is like making love in a canoe - fucking near water. But glad to see an action being taken.
I think the world knows that American beer is utter nats piss. Weak and tastes fuckin awful! It's why just about the only US brand beer that sells globally is Bud but heck that brand nuked itself so 🤷♀️
Bc is only doing the stuff from red states as a message to him and his idiots. They need to tax tesla like crazy if they really want to make a point. That 🫏 hat is every countries problem
...But N.S. does not border the State of Maine. New Brunswick borders Maine. Or did you mean that tolls will be doubled on U.S. plated commercial vehicles in N.S.?
Canadians paid for 75-80% of the seaway because the US couldn’t get their shit together on funding. Just like your buddy who can’t find his wallet when the bar tab needs to be paid. Maybe we should send the Orange Buffoon his half of the bill with interest from the 1950’s. #CanadaStrongAsFuck
From my outsiders view, where does the money from tariffs go? The treasury.
Who has now taken over the treasury? Elon Musk is the answer. Its all a gigantic fraud. I really feel sorry for Americans who are getting shagged up the arse by Trump.
Maybe there will be a US science and research brain drain and Canada may benefit from that! Just as the US benefitted from post war German scientists for the space race!
The United States Mexico Canada agreement (USMCA) was drawn up largely at Trump’s behest after he tore up the previous North America free trade agreement (Nafta) during his first term as US president.
Trump should have imposed 80% tariffs on Brazil and Colombia for defying him over the military planes bringing the migrants back to their countries of origin. Someone suggest it to Trump...........😂
Then watch Americans lose their shit because the price of the coffee they drink, goes up by 80%
About the tolls, it's not quite as you mentioned. It's a toll to cross the Cobequid Pass, which is a section of the highway that links Nova Scotia to the rest of the country.
Well, Canadians can buy that booze from Blue States, i.e., California for one.
And in Tennessee, i.e., yes, people will be let go from their distillery jobs in those RED states but they are the ones who made those states RED, so there's that.
Unfortunately, not all those workers are shaded red - remember only 39% of the country voted for Trump.
But everyone is going to suffer under this admin. But good the Canadians have other sources - and it will help those blue States.
Did not vote - or did not have their votes counted? I wish the Dems would set up a secure site and ask everyone who voted D to respond, the numbers might be a surprise.
I don't drink brown booze anyway - well except for Tito's Vodka that comes from Texas. But hey, in MN we have Phillip's Vodka - so I'll be buying local anyway. Cheap but does the same trick as Tito's! Cheers!
And I'd like to add the BC whiskey scene is coming along quite nicely. Mainland Whiskey is my favourite at the moment, and they also do a lot of flavour experiments.
My support for Canada is that I can't justify taking a planned holiday in the US when that country is starting a world trade war. Trump is threatening us too.
Until those ignorant to reality in our country feel the pain.
We are stuck with those willing to burn down our country in the name of tax cuts and deregulation for the RICH.
This is our corporate America, we bend over for the RICH overlords.
There are two system.
The Rich fucked it all up.
#WTFU
The rich fucked it up, but they wouldn't have been *able* to without the low IQ racists who voted for Trump. If they voted because of cheaper groceries, I'd love to hear what they saw when, because of all the tariffs, the price of groceries rockets lol.
Why can't you get out? You have no right to live in Canada as an immigrant. Why would you even *want* to turn tail and run instead of staying and *fighting* the evil that's taken hold of your country?
How would you propose fighting said evil when even voting is no longer valid? I’ve always known Canadians as a caring people, now you’re suddenly nationalist when we’re held hostage by a dictator??
FYI: the very good people of Nova Scotia send Boston MA a Christmas tree every year because of MA rushing to their aid decades ago after a catastrophic explosion there.
We remember our friends and neighbors. We reject Trump and his mobsters. https://novascotia.ca/treeforboston/
I'm an American.
And I know it's gonna be a long four years. I did not vote for this man.I would never vote for a rapist or a convicted felon to represent our country. It's just appalling what he's getting ready to do to this country. And he's gonna drive us right back into the ground like lastime
Meanwhile, 🇷🇺 and 🇨🇳 enjoy the fast evolving division amongst friends and allies now occurring. 🇪🇺 is likely going to be Trump's next target, as he lets Musk do a full assault on 🇺🇸 federal government.
Unless GOP wakes up, not likely, we're heading for chaos on almost every front. Europe - grow up!
This is a good tactic, but my guess is that most of the Americans who travel to Nova Scotia are from New England states, who overwhelmingly do not support this administration.
We have replaced American beer, with these brands that we got from Denmark/Greenland. They say it is a big seller there.
#CanadaStrongAsFuck
#BoycottUSA
I wonder if similar toll increases are being considered for the Ambassador Bridge. I mean, I assume the Americans would increase the toll on Cdn commercial vehicles. So a bit of a wash.
Sorry guys, no piss water for you. Guess you will have to make do with Labat Blue and Crown Royal. Have a 7&7 for all the sad bastards South of the border.
Wait till everybody gets back to their desks on Monday and discovers the Canadian government's first list of American goods that will be subject to tariffs.

So while I mentioned wine and other spirits in passing, that wasn’t the point of the comment.
I’m disappointed that the tariff is broad so that it hurts California, but do what you have to do.
Item two, thankfully, Canada has two good wine regions of our own, and we will continue to import wine from other parts of the world.
If you meant to reply to someone else who was suggesting that the tariffs are predominantly targeting products
I suspect there are ways to work in exceptions, but it takes more time than a single announcement.
Not sure where you're getting your info 🤔
I’m not a beer drinker, so I don’t care one way or the other. It all tastes gross to me.
My understanding from many arguments I have endured over the years as a spectator
I’m would guess that large brand Canadian beers are also in those top fives across the country. Breadth of distribution plays a role.
Canadian beer drinkers will still have a wide range of choices available to them.
I cannot be Aussie polite, when it comes too drinking beer. Haha
I wonder if some of the product left on shelves is in part of function of breadth of distribution as well as product appeal.
Alcohol is an inferior drug anyway.
There are always also the inevitable mediocre quality that are highly overpriced, and the occasional gem that is low priced but much better quality than you would anticipate.
I don’t drink at all, so it doesn’t impact me directly, but I don’t underestimate its influence.
Just like in 2018, the first thing to get hit is booze, quit Google shows BC, Ontario and Nova Scotia and probably everyone else
Except the ball lickers

CANADA GO. !
Oh! Canada!
You go!
Unfortunately I couldn't say Byeee to succerbööörrg and Bezos.

Thanks, Fella. 👍
on the.... ferry?
it was the "entering" from the US that got me, since NS doesn't have a land border with the US.
Most of the money comes from them staying at beachside spots, restaurants, and shopping.
I normally vacation and go to concerts in the USA , even if tariffs were lifted tomorrow, the blatant betrayal has happened, trust and respect is lost.
Again... in so very sorry we let this happen. I'll die trying. I promise you that.
I'm mad, embarrassed ... infuriated at my fellow citizens that thought this was good.
The Canadians were great friends. We looked forward to seeing them every year.
Fuck Trump.
The French Canadians would stop in visit and stay a few days as they headed towards the coast. The French families spanned both borders.
I’m just grateful the Canadians decided not to pull the electricity on my family up there during a Maine winter.
Using the Nazi playbook.
Canadian leadership is so much smarter than our FOTUS, I'm so glad they are standing strong!
🍁
Unlike Trump, who decided all Americans should pay more for all of it, all at once.
He wants MAGA to hate Canada. We're the next out group when the immigrants are all gone
I'm angry. I want to rile up everybody in the US.
But I don't want the kill anyone.
Your leadership counts on our humanity to draw out this war.
I'd close the border and send US diplomats packing.
Close our airspace. Shut coastal passages to US ships.
So much more.
It is sad. A lot of my friends' families are from Canada. It's so upsetting. I'm so embarrassed and angry. Avoid us. This isn't normal.

Between the 3, they consume $2B USD of American alcohol. Not a lot, but alcohol manufacturers will feel the pain.
