The Ford Pinto gas tank failures were fixed with a simple (and cheap) plastic shield modification that prevented the gas tank from being ruptured. Over 900 people died in fiery crashes that could have been avoided by fixing the problem that was identified early in the production of the Pinto.
Reputedly the cost of the Ford Pinto gas tank modification was tallied against the cost Ford would pay out in lawsuits. It was cheaper to go ahead and allow people to die.
27 died by fire resulting from a rear end collision in 3 million pintos over 6.5 years. If 51 died by Tesla autopilot in 6.76 million vehicles over the course of 26 years then autopilot is looking pretty good.

There are a lot of details to investigate in this. E.g.: There haven't been 6.75m Yeslas for the whole 26 years. And that would be interesting, but we'll need an honest researcher first.
They were just starting their lives, I've worked in that neighborhood, i've got a lot of things to say about design choices, but i'm not going to do it right now. I feel for their families and friends right now.
I wonder how much of this is a product of "the type of person that would buy a tesla". you would often see teslas in the parking lots around here, and it is not uncommon to see them driving around recklessly, or pulling in and out of spaces with zero regard of others.
depends, some are jerks who have the capability accelerate super fast. some of it is just bad design, like having turn signals on a non intuitive place, or messing around on a screen because they had the genious idea of removing buttons for stuff. too many people talk on phones and tailgate though

And where on earth does 26 years come from? Tesla didn't have a car on the road until 2008.
