Skittles are pure processed sugar, safe to eat for centuries. If we're talking a healthy/organic candy like peanut M&Ms I'd steer clear.

What's disingenuous about comparing that to corn syrup? They're both highly saturated sugar syrups, seems plausible that they have the same preservative mechanism.
