What pisses me off most is Manfred is doing it entirely to suck up to Trump, who probably doesn’t even remember he tweeted about Pete Rose a few weeks ago.
If he was credibly accused of rape, he should never be in the Hall of Fame. Question is was he credibly accused of this? If so, that’s a game ender. I advocated for him but this would change my view.
I wonder if the HOF will include Rose’s entire history in its exhibits. To be fair they should tell the whole story. He was a great baseball player and a shitty human.
Lots of shitty humans across major sports have been inducted into their sport’s HOF. Pete shouldn’t be inducted for his humanity. Pete should be recognized for his contribution to baseball.
Rose’s statistical significance in the history of baseball is already reflected in the exhibits of the Hall, he is in no way deserving of a plaque in his honor to launder his memory.
The plaque should reflect the whole truth, pedophilia, corrupt gambling and whatever else is out there. If they’re gonna put him in for baseball, they should explain the rest.
No. He doesn’t get a fucking plaque, that’s the point.
The Hall is a museum that tells the history of baseball.
The plaque room is the grand honor, a signifier of membership in the elite wing of the annals of baseball history.
He is one of the elite of baseball history. He was also, as I said, a shitty human being. If the HOF voters put him in, they have to put both up there. Neither erases the other.
So weird that for so many people, finding out their childhood heroes were awful people doesn't mean they stop being a hero. The argument of people I know who defend his HOF entry basically boils down to: 'I didn't know about that when I was ten'.
I remember when the scandal biew up from Rose betting on games, which was what got him barred originally, and he's been off my radar for decades, so today I learned about this
I hate to break it to you, but measuring moral character by baseball statistics is probably not great in the first place. I mean, they didn’t even let the blacks play against the whites for a pretty long time. So, maybe baseball as a measurement for good isn’t so, well, good.
I assume Rose needs to be voted in by the veterans committee. Do you know if any members 1) Played with Rose and 2) Actually liked Rose? I get that for younger men, especially whites & especially wealthy bros, Rose is a culture-war signifier. But do his peers want him in?
The other thing that gets my goat is that Rose is actually in the Hall of Fame. His career stats are amply represented where appropriate. He just doesn’t have a plaque in the one room. “Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame!” is a tell: the person saying it has never been to Cooperstown.
I legit didn't realize how much controversy the museum covers until I visited it. For all the "HOF is ignoring history" stuff you read, what they're really talking about are plaques. Bonds is all over the Museum (rightly so; deserves induction, too)!
I also assume that anyone advocating for Rose’s induction is not actually a baseball fan. A sports fan, sure, maybe even watches some games & roots for the Yanks or Astros if they’re on. But real actual fans just don’t care that much about a Molitor/Brett-level player from 50 years ago.
As to the second question, 1) People from NYC or Houston; 2) People who played for a Yankees or Astros team in youth ball; and 3) Sports fans who aren’t actually into baseball all that much as a sport or MLB in particular. NYY & HOU are common default rooting interests for non-fans.
And yeah I’m old enough to have seen Rose play in his prime. He was a great player & fun to watch! But not radically more so than several of his peers & teammates.

“Rose said… he had vaginal sex with the woman but… ‘based upon my information and belief at that time, she was sixteen.’”

Who gives a fuck about baseball if you’ve split the rear end of a child open ?
Talk sense

(I literally found out from this thread)
Because, in America, gambling is somehow worse than rape.
Such pompous asses.
Rose is in there but doesn't deserve a plaque.
Rose literally has more 200 hit seasons than Aaron Judge has 200 strikeout seasons.
Who on earth would root for the Evil Empire or the Astros?
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
No. Fucking. Way.
