they are charging you for upgrades to certain games, specifically ones that are getting major upgrades. A bunch of games are getting free upgrades, and you can play any switch 1 game on 2 for free
Not charging you to play, charging for the upgrades. I still think it’s shitty (except maybe the dlc upgrades that seems kinda standard to charge for depending on the amount of content) but you can still play your old games without the upgrades for no charge.
A good amount of them have upgrades to the resolution and FPS. Also, don't forget about the added expansions.
They'll also be cheaper if you already own the games.
Xbox's were all holding quality + performance upgrades while Nintendo's are coming with secondary add-ons. Even BoTW and ToTK have secondary add-ons with the new guide features they're adding.
CDPR did that for Cyberpunck 2077. The launch was horrible, so the patch/upgrade was much needed for QOL.
It makes sense if they don't plan on releasing another Mario Kart for the next decade, so long as they have updates from time-to-time. $80 would be insane if this was an annually released game.
The price sucks, but I don't think I got more replay value out of any video game in my life than the last Mario Kart game. Nintendo knows this will be a best seller for the entire console's existence.
Fair point, for digital. Though it still is 90 for physical as well as the system and peripherals being as expensive as it is listed? Of course there’s some greed too. I’m not disregarding that.
Because it's a Nintendo game it's still gonna sell like water because fanboys, and they'll never lower the price and they'll keep charging even more for their releases. It's just sad, man.
Standard editions for AAA games are starting to cost up to $300-400 in countries like Brazil, with "deluxe editions" going up to $600. It's not gonna take long for these prices to reach a worldwide market and then games (at least AAA ones) will become a privilege rather than a commodity.
I hate Trump too, but this has nothing to do with him. His bullshit is driving up PHYSICAL prices. Charging 80 for a DIGITAL game is pure corporate greed from Nintendo. Fuck them.
If youre going to buy the game anyway, I would suggest buying the Switch 2 with the game already packaged with it.
Significantly less money.
(30 less for the game)
Actually, Nintendo’s new physical game cards only have a part of the game’s code in it now while the rest is downloaded from the internet. Thus killing game preservation and actually owning the full game…
You can scroll through Nintendo’s reddit boards to find the complex answer, but basically you cant charge digital much less than physical because you risk sacrificing retail real estate in the stores that sell Nintendo products, you risk upsetting your retail partners.
they cant do wild pricing discrepancies in the midst of an upcoming trade war. The tariffs today will launch retaliation from other regions, so they cant guarantee EU isnt going to turn around and launch their own tariffs
Even money there will be multiple $30 expansion packs after the fact as well. The Switch 2 announcement was really deflated by the constant tags of "with purchase". Giving Sony a run for their money for nickle and diming players.
And it's not like you don't want to buy it but like there's other things you want and are on sale so it's more economically viable. Like if I had choice between paying $60 for breath of the wild 94 $40 for elden ring I'll just get elden ring

For free.
🙄
"Nintendo Game"
Going to waiting a long time for that
They're going to store the massive amount of piss they're taking with this price.
Pass.
For those that need it, have fun, enjoy.
I have a shameful backlog that needs my attention lol
Damn shameful backlog. Oof lol

You get what you pay for.
Really, there should be no reason for the retail to cost that much either.
