Kids being free on Amtrak in Washington is awesome, but definitely sucks that just crossing the border to Portland makes them not free. If there was better transit to Portland from Vancouver WA, the move would be to just get off there.

amtrak between seattle and portland should ideally be like $25 round trip maximum

Meanwhile in a Chevy Bolt that round trip could be $15 of electricity and would carry 4 people.
We've got to make trains even slightly more competitive.
Iβm not sure what the cost per mile is on electric - but the $0.50/mi or more rate would call the round trip at least $200 in a car.
Bolt sees about 3.9 miles per kwh, so 45 kwh used each direction (of 66 kwh battery), total of 90 kwh.
Going rate for electricity in Seattle is 13.9 cents / kwh, so $12.51 for 90 kwh.
If you start in Wenatchee, you could get a full charge for $1.32 (2 cents/kwh).
