"Mama called the doctor and had to wait an hour, listening to the most Godawful ‘music’, and then, when they answered, they said someone would call back later, but they would only ring once, so stay by your phone. In the meantime, the monkeys had got bored and gone off to do something else."
I believe by that point 7 monkeys have already perished previously and the cycle of self harm will continue for these prime mates who have weaved for themselves the narrative of their own destruction.
TV Tropes "Nightmare Fuel" Page: "Despite the cheery atmosphere of the song, it's lyrics contain simple but surprisingly graphic descriptions of the monkeys injuring, or perhaps even dying, due to the bed jumping." [Picture of one of the monkeys in the hospital]
Mamma went to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your son needs an emergency surgery but you aren’t covered under your existing policy. We can stop the bleeding but he’ll likely never recover the use of his hands.”
It was a joke. We're riffing on how people get carried away when kid's content has like one serious scene or dark implication and act like that means it's not *really* for kids anymore.
That Korra bit was pretty heavy for a Nickelodean show though, the guy took a woman's air from her lungs and she dies slowly. That season overall got away with some stuff that I had never seen in a cartoon before. That being said it was still showcased in the least explicit way possible.
Okay, in defense of the My Little Pony post, that show probably has a lot more dark premises than you remember it having. I still think it's appropriate for children, but if they were people and not ponies, lots of parents probably wouldn't like their kids watching it.

One fell off and broke his head.

So we're the morbidly grim Grimm's fairy tales.
Ring Around the Rosies is about the plague killing everyone.
