There is proper old school Graun spelling mistake in the version I clicked on. A hyperlink said 'thirty-sex percent'. I think it should read 'thirty-six percent'. Thanks.
Yes. The evidence is crystal clear. Kids are NOT SAFE on social media. This is beyond the predatory pedophiles behavior. Social media now an extremely more dangerous, damaging & deadly environment for children.
Excluding @bsky.app which at this stage is learning from previous platform downfalls. Showing what can be done with the right policies and of course people 🩵
1/2 All social media companies should have to run Know Your Customer checks. Confirming age, identity and contact details. Legislators could use this to force them to hide any harmful content to minors/. Any infringement would result in multimillion $ fines.
2/2 Bots dissapear and ayone spreading hate speach or inciting violence or grooming children can easily be identified and investigated. Why isn't this done?
Because it's a ridiculously stupid idea that ignores the massive amount of harm it will do. If you honestly think it'd make a dent in bots, hate speech, violence or child endangerment this must be your first day on the internet.
Massive amount of harm? Yes, all accounts would need to be verified as a codition of licence to operate. Fines of 10% of annual turnover for non compliance. You seem a bit put out by all this, are you ok? Go have a cup of tea. This works - it's been proven to work in the gambling industry.
I think that outright banning social media is a detriment to democracy more than keeping it up. But proper measurements must be taken, unlike the hellhole that is X after Elon Musk
During the pandemic, goats from the great orme wandered into town. Local biscuit maker does a special goat edition.i send some to my brother cos I though it was funny. He's not stopped buying me goat themed things since.
Do you check daily screen time?
Do you feel anxious and humiliated after scathing personal abuse on sm ?
Have you ever been relentlessly gang bullied by strangers ?
Are you happy for 13 yr olds to use Twitter ?
Do you know the WHO recognises harm from sm?
Or is it all good and no problem?
A ban on social media will fix nothing about people being sad, scared and lonely because social media didn't cause these problems, they highlighted the extend.
Why does the guardian platform this partisan apologist? What next? Parnell McGuiness? Extremes at both ends are just as bad & seeking to legitimise this toxic age ban minus any mention of the likely ramifications or lack of evidence does your credibility no favours. https://bsky.app/profile/my2centsworth.bsky.social/post/3lcajyue7qk2h
Personally I’d love to buy a mobile phone with no internet access so I wasn’t sucked into it all the time. However even employers expect us all to have smartphones these days and I wouldn’t be able to do my job without it 😞
While I understand this, without decent, free media, this would leave us without the information, communication &support. Otherwise we are mainly left with damaging propaganda! Sad to say, but true, especially having seen all the lies abounding since the Leave Lies , Brexit and the far right rising
Has this person never gone outside to touch grass cause I have just as many issues irl with people as I do online but it’s more stressful because I have to act like I care even if they’re horrible humans who have stabbed me in the back
I remember my parents thinking TV was the end 50 years ago. Social media is so important to me. Where would I get info without fb groups? Communicate so easily with my friends? How'd I know what was going on in world without Bluesky - the tv certainly doesn't tell us! Back to phones, mags n gossip?
I'm in Sydney. My daughter (12) is not happy at potentially losing Snapchat
Though I don't allow her to use the more damaging social platforms (Insta, FB, Tik Tok, Twitter etc.), I'm a fan of the law and the one preventing phones in schools but applying this to adults is a bridge too far, I think.
Just because Van sucks and can't handle being confronted with her own terrible words and actions doesn't mean the rest of us should have to be restricted.
Well, to be honest Van is far from the only one. Did you see stats on how much time we in average spend with friends/family vs on social media now vs. historically? It’s scary. Insane actually.
I think you’re reading things into my comment that aren’t there. Social media is great in many ways, it connects people who would otherwise never meet (people with special interests, people who live far apart etc) but it’s worrying just how much time we spend on it. Not for everyone, but for many.
Yeah the world is changing. Trying to be the police at the front gate of the Internet is moronic and unworkable. Publishing the rantings of a woman who created fake accounts (with her own face genderswapped) and made them have conversations is borderline criminal.
Hmm. I found my sister last year, who I had lost touch with and hadn't spoken to in 20 years, via Facebook of all places, which I only joined to be able to watch a local theater production online during covid. People will find ways to "avoid" family and friends, should they be forced to interact?
Don’t read things into other people’s words that aren’t there. Where on earth did you read me say I want to ban social media? I wrote that social media has great qualities such as connecting with people far away. Doesn’t mean it’s without issues that many spend half their lives on it.
You're talking unfavorably (it makes teens avoid family and friends!) about social media in a conversation based off an article talking about how the government should ban social media, what conclusion was I supposed to reach?
She has one point here correct--MONETIZATION of social media is a problem.
Social media needs to be a TRUE public square--something that just exists and is maintained--and just serves as a place for people to meet, gather, and exist--without money hungry overlords.

Congress needs to pass KOSA & send it to the President.

Less predatory social media, general literacy, and some level of fact checking ability goes a long way.
now I'm sad ...
