The idea that if Zelensky had been nice to Trump that Trump would not be siding with Putin is without credibiluty. For instance, Zelensky was criticized for disagreeing with Trump publicly (that is a new mortal sin)--but Macron did the exact same thing just days earlier.

I think a lot of the reaction of this type are they are incessed that Zelensky didn't give the obsequiance due from a vassel. The unstated assumption is that he is a vassel, and that is the appropriate relationship dynamic to frame things in.
(That's not Trump's reason though, as you point out).
