Normally that line goes "expectation versus reality", but you have to put "prediction" because nobody actually realistically expected that to happen. It was always just a right wing media scare tactic.
Labour doing x 'may' cause y. For the right the consequence of government action is only ever negative, so the 'only' consequence of raising the minimum wage is, no ifs no buts, inflation.
I thought all the 1000s of bricklayers and and joiners would be unable to afford the rise. Funny how I was a joiner for 50 years and never knew any of my fellow builders that sent their kids to private schools.
The small independent school I teach in lost ~5 pupils over the course of last year because of it. Our incoming Year 7 cohort is much smaller than the previous 5 years, ~15/20 pupils fewer. We'll *probably* be ok in the long term, but the next few years will be tight.
I keep hearing about the 'ordinary hard working families' struggling to pay VAT on private school fees (as opposed to all the wealthy parents and quiz show gentry).
It's a luxury item. Pay the tax or send your kids to state school. You choose but, please, stop with the privileged whining.
Families like mine...we both work, pay income tax, council tax, private school vat...and what do we get back in return? Sweet fuckall. If anything we get should tax credit for not burdening the state school system.but hey, lets keep the class wars going and bankrupt the Treasury with welfare
Oh dear, is it the migrants again? Vote Brexit, they need us more than we need them, we'll do a trade deal with America. Wind Turbines kill birds. Jeremy Clarkson is a hard working farmer.
Really hammers home how the organised opposition to this was SO bad - essentially what they've done (and what was always going to happen) is put themselves in the position where everything they claim in the future can be objectively dismissed. Easy now for government to look further at the sector.
I never thought it was going to happen. If you have the money to buy a luxury car, very few are going to walk out of the showroom because the salesman tells them we had to charge a little bit more for the wing mirrors.
Why just schools...ban luxury cars, luxury hand bags, luxury anything...why do the ultra rich pay same vat on a G wagon vs a Ford Focus....raise the VAT on all luxury goods..the only thing this policy has achieved is burdened normal hard working families like mine that aspire for a better education.
I wonder when all the right wing papers and commentators will be up in arms about a well-paid presenter using his privileged platform to make political points when he works for the "allegedly unbiased" BBC?? Any minute now, I should think...
What? The people (upper-middle and upper class) that consistently threaten to leave the country or that the economy will collapse if something they don't like happens, were making empty threats, again?!
Who could have predicted that a bunch of wealthy entitled people would pay the tax due by removing their perk, rather than place little Tarquin in a state school like they said they would.
Just wait for the reality of 'farms to go bust' due to paying half as much IHT as anyone elseπ.
Absolutely this - which is why the Govt could be confident that there would not be a squeeze on state school capacity. Even if 10% of the 7% in private moved that's 0.7% extra places required. Well within current capacity. And may save some schools from closure keeping public sector staff in jobs.

Very few people, if any, *genuinely* thought it would happen.

I'd just ban them outright.
No-one should be able to pay for their kids to jump the queue.
Personally I don't object to luxury goods, as a rule. But it is very obviously wrong to allow parents to pay for their children to jump the queue.
It's almost a form of corruption.

What about little Annunziata π
She'll still be living off the Β£6,000,000 uncle Jacob sponged from taxpayers to do up his wife's stately house a few years back.
(That is if they haven't spaffed it all up the wall on foie gras, mogadon and oxycontin)
"FUCK EM".
Bedroom tax policy kids may starve....
