This is where I defer to the experts: drunk men on airplanes hitting on flight attendants, and he insisted on being given a domestic beer, not an american beer, when he took issue with the IPA he was handed when the flight crew insisted he'd already drank the normal beers dry.

Former car salesman here (in Canada, Toyota dealership), I used the word "domestic" all the time to soften the blow when talking about used cars on our lot that I was trying to sell, and "American" as a derogatory term for anything on someone elses lot that the customer was cross-shopping
