Some people have never heard of Arianda Grande, or about any recent movie premiers. I've met people who'd never heard of the Beatles, Stones, Moody Blues....It's amazing how distracted we can become by our own set of stimuli in America. I'm sure they know a few artists that I'd never heard of..
I feel like most people are that offline, and since I don't interact with them because they're not where I'm at, I forget that they exist and have a *completely* different perspective on the world than I do because of it.
I read the book many years ago. I thought it was “different” to say the least. Took me a while to get through it. I did see it on stage and thought that was pretty good.
Ha ha. I’m that spouse also. By the way, great movie. Just not a fan of multi-year installment movies. Not sure if I’ll still be interested by the time the final installment of Dune rolls around.
I know, especially since they have been around since 1993 and have released 100s if not 1000s of movies. Which one did you want to see? (Asking for a friend)
My husband asked if I wanted to go and see it with him. I said I was surprised he wanted to go as it’s a musical (he hates singing in films) to which he replied "it’s a musical?".
I missed knowing about it until my colleague told me about it on Wednesday as she finished grading and prepared to leave campus. Confusion morphed to excitement then back to confusion. "How did I miss this?"
He is sooooooooo disconnected! Wicked has been producing movies since 1993! Some of its more memorable talent has been Jenna Jameson and Stormy Daniels.
I mean... Even Mattel toys link to the Wicked website!
Actually, yes. I run several pages devoted to cruising (ship, lol) on FB. One person posted that they never ate in the main dining room all cruise long, using the lido buffet instead, because they thought the main dining room cost extra. You’d be SHOCKED how many people are completely out of touch.
My husband and I were looking at the Grammy noms and he asked who Charli XCX was, so I said “you know, brat summer?” and he had NO idea what I was talking about — wild
The printed word does not show the context or tone of the question. I read that as him being beside himself that they actually made a Wicked movie. Maybe that's my own bias because I would have no interest in anything "Wicked".
I should say the cis hets&het-leaning types don't get wicked ads.
I certainly wouldn't have known if not for the periodic updates on Ari drama, and I definitely wouldn't have known what day it came out. Which is a shame because I love musicals and wicked was one of my favorite movies of the year
I consider myself online as much as the average person and I KNOW OF the Wicked movie but I don't get plastered with ads with it. If your spouse is offline slightly less than me than his algorithms probably don't register it for him.
That's legit impressive because it's not just being offline, it also means not watching anything where the hundreds of ads have been plastered or even going to the grocery store where they're selling Wicked branded wheat thins!!!!
I know. I have seen cross marketing for that movie in almost every aspect of life. He isn't just off-line, he's oblivious to marketing and I applaud him for being able to avoid it.
I think it's probably easier than you think depending on media consumption habits. I basically only know about it from socially media and the last movie I saw in a theater. I don't watch broadcast TV and use an ad blocker and haven't seen anything about it in the places I shop.
Do you go grocery shopping or watch live sports? It's on 25% of the products in the store and has tie ins through multiple sport leagues. I had no interest in it personally, but I have seen marketing materials for it all over the place.
I basically only grocery shop at Costco so idk if it's different there. Really only watch one football team but I kinda just tune out during adverts so I may have just missed them
Honestly, I'm online quite 6 I knew the movie was coming out, but I don't remember seeing that many ads. I could've probably just blackout during those ads.
Not really related, but I have wondered whether, if someone is an X user, do they see any posts on the subject of Wicked - ? Is there a real red/ blue gulf when it comes to pop and theater exposure?
i call my dad pretty regularly and explaining pop culture that he’d be interested in if he knew it existed is always such a delight. it’s like having a degree in the Fun & Now and being handed a captive, captivated audience for it
I didn't even know about it until 2-3 days before release and I live in a big city. Ppl don't see or care could pass by it without knowing it they might think it's the play. I'm pretty sure this happens to everyone sometime in the life before.
I dragged my husband along because of the great reviews and sat through a half hour of insipid singing and dancing through a glacially slow plot before I took pity on him and said we could leave.
Comments
I saw mentions, but I just thought the play came back to a major city.
In my defense, on Thanksgiving, I said, "I have the book I need to read it." Someone responded, "There's a book?"
The music was my least favorite part
Yes, I can now imagine being that offline
I mean... Even Mattel toys link to the Wicked website!

I'm surprised they made a movie about them.
My wife had to explain what the hell Wicked was to me….
I certainly wouldn't have known if not for the periodic updates on Ari drama, and I definitely wouldn't have known what day it came out. Which is a shame because I love musicals and wicked was one of my favorite movies of the year
" a wicked movie, eh? I'll be the judge a that"
Me: “It’s a hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton.”
Her: “What?”
Me: “Seriously. It’s a hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton.”
Tell your husband to stop living under a rock.
Anyways Im still really sad the orange man won. I cant believe this. It is all just too Wicked.
(I watch premium movie channels-no ads)
Bullshit.
