This was awfully quick. The tariffs have yet to even start. This shows the other side of the tariff. American producers will raise their prices to match the higher cost of imports. And blame the tariffs for the increase!
And producers that produce the same stuff without imported goods, and are not affected by the tariffs will increase there prices as well, Just because the can now. That's a well known consequence of tariffs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-eHOSq3oqI
It’s not gouging, it’s literally the effect that tariffs have. Business aren’t going to shoulder the extra costs from them for their customers. You wanna be mad at anyone it’s Trump for putting the tariffs in place.
But they already paid for the gas they have on hand that did not have tariffs applied yet, correct? So passing on a tariff they have not paid for seems wrong.
My family’s nursery business uses many imported supplies that cannot be sourced in the states. The felon will ruin our business. 😡🤬
Depends on how much they have on hand and how their supply chain is integrated. Truly, the orange shitgibbon doesn’t care about anyone other than himself and his billionaire friends. I wish your family’s business all the luck, hopefully he’ll turn heel once there’s backlash.
I live very close to the Irving refinery, Canada's largest. Why is it on this coast, instead of out west where the oil is? This is why. It refines 300,000+ barrels of oil/day, and most of that is exported to the American Northeast. I feel for all of you who voted otherwise.
The refinery was built before NL's offshore oil or Sable Island oil from NS were in production, and local production in NB was never more than 25 barrels/day. Top suppliers are the US, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria.
I work for a company that makes/sells power tools. They increased costs before the election, basically "just in case." Curious what Monday will be like.
Tarrifs are collected by the US government and do not impact the sale of the product. The seller is not charging or receiving any extra $$ and are just informing the consumer that the new price will now include the 25% Trump Tax.
I assume they'd claim that it's a tax for the purposes of this clause:
The Fixed Price excludes all government-imposed taxes and fees and other fees assessed by the Company, which taxes and fees you also agree to pay (except Vermont customers, as to government-imposed fees only).
Exactly. I worked for Irving Oil. They are not obligated to pay extra without sharing that cost with the customer.
Welcome to trumps tariffs.
🤬 the lessons are going to be swift and painful

That’s bullshit by the way there’s no way those guys didn’t buy their gas for the year on a Fordward contract to lock in their margins, I would raise holy hell. This is just profiteering at this point.
This will happen with all fuels. Irving will start it. They are huge in Canada And watch what happens to NHIS prices.Every establishment that uses any fuel at all will have to raise their prices. Inside a week it will be a 25 percent minimum hike in all prices.
Good for you,we're not as hateful as Americans are. That being said, being nice/good neighbors doesn't seem to mean anything, so perhaps we should stoop to American standards and ways of dealing with people.
You can do a lot between now and then. You can put pressure on members of congress. You can organize others to be coordinated in their pressure. You can expose their lies.
Hell your constitution gives you the right to rebellion to protect the constitution from nefarious leaders.
Well - when you’re dealing with Russians bombing your mum. And the Russians at home saying it’s nowt to do with me. Then I look at Americans that say it’s nowt to do with me…. I side with Canadians. Those Americans need to do something and now.
I wish so much that this wasn't happening. So many of us did not vote for this disaster and are in complete disbelief and horror at what is occurring. He is purposely destroying our country and sabotaging our foreign relations. It's sickening.
I am wishing all of you americans good luck in the coming two decennia (or longer).
I think a lot of countries are already looking at collaboration for new international trade zones and contracts; EU, Canada, Mexico, African countries such as SA, and for the hell of it, even China. Watch out US!
A lot of households & businesses in Vermont, Maine & New Hampshire are going to get very cold. Has anyone heard from Senators Susan Collins (R-Concerned) & Angus King (I-🙄)?
It will be interesting to see how many companies will seize the opportunity to gouge American buyers of Canadian products. By "rounding off" the 25% Hidden Trump Tax to 30%, for example and blaming the whole thing on Canada.
(1) curious how they will pretend to know how much is from Canada and how much is from elsewhere.
(2) fixed price contract is a contract. Trump does not honor contracts, but you can bet that the courts will enforce yours. Don't accept Irving's BS
On the bright side, the increase in cost will reduce consumption and thus CO2 emissions. Oh… and definitely not the schadenfreude. No. Not that at all.
LOL - He's 'governing' like he'll be King forever. When in reality he will lose his power in 2026 / 28 and once again, Democrats will have to pick up the pieces of a greedy, incompetent Republican President.
Can't speak for anyone else's experience but we're having solar put on right now and it'll really be a few years before we see significant savings on utilities. And the process has taken several months.
Solar is an option but I believe government puts tariffs on solar imports as well which drives the overall price up. Some states have subsidies on solar packages for house.
3 years ago I put in solar and sized the system to charge an electric car. I generate 10Gw per year, run my house, drive for free and have power left over at the end of the year that the power company has to compensate me for. (I live in So Cal so we have lots of sun).
Yah. I am visiting my sister in Long Beach now and she just got a loan/grant to fix her roof and put in solar. In Vancouver we are being encouraged to buy heat pumps. But our hydro is cheapish in any case.
Maybe a low IQ trump voters will get a clue that trump just took money out of their pockets with his moronic tariffs!!
All because Melania smiled at Justin!!
You might want to look in to this, it sounds to me like #TariffGrift. Your propane was most likely already in the country and the company 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 pay a tariff on it.
Cheers from your friend, 🍁Canada.
Please make sure to add alt-text on images (little ALT box in the corner of images before posting) or force it in settings > accessibility > force alt-text.
😳 where are you? I have radiant floor heat, too, and my gas bill is <$140CDN a month. (I do recognize an inherent uplift on propane v. gas, but still, day-ummmm)
The one positive is that I have no bill from May - September bcuz no AC or need for it and my electric bill is minimal those months as well. But the cold months are killers
There are always clauses that allow the price to change in response to extraordinary events. I imagine a sudden trade war would count as extraordinary.
Trump broke the trade contract, a contract he negotiated and signed when he stiffed the Canadians. Once broken they can do what they like.
The US are now trade agreement breakers.
A contract is a contract. The only way they can vary it without your agreement is if there is a force majeure clause in the contract that applies. Such as acts of war and maybe but not definitely a tariff.
They can’t just change it in a country with a functioning legal system without such a clause.
Lived in the US - NH for 12 years. Read every line of the contract my oil company sent me for my price lock. Page 4 of a 5 page contract indicated the price could and would change. They have the out and it is there in every single contract. By the way - I never took a guaranteed price contract.
I think we should give discounts to Canadian consumers on our energy bills and proportionally increase the price we charge for every going to the States. Let the Americans pay for my heating costs for awhile!
We import natural gas from the US. When I had natural gas heat that's where it came from and Canada is responding with our own tariffs... as well as blocking access to certain American products (so far mostly Booze produced in Red States)
I live in New Hampshire. My prices are going up for electricity which largely comes from Quebec hydro. My propane prices go up, largely imported from Canada. All due to my brain dead President
I hope Americans can start reigning in your President... because his BS about subsidizing Canada, because of a trade deficit is moronic. We have been actually subsidizing the US with discounted fuel for a long time.
This won't be temporary. Just wait until Trump and Musk take an axe to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, head start, and food stamps. When they kick out the people who feed us, don’t expect sympathy from me. I will, however, feel the impact of their ignorance, and that’s the real tragedy.
There was $3 trillion in the fedeal account that musk took over Friday night...the orange fucker gave him permission...I say take the money and get your fucking oeanfe ass out of outr country and your fucking African will never habe a business in
this country, no matter who he buys... We need to strip every MAGA of every penny they own...Sell their homes and throw them in the streets. The brought this piece of orange shit back into the WH and they wil never be forgiven..
WIKI...Irving Oil was one established in 1924 by Canadian oil baron and billionaire, Kenneth "K.C." Irving, whose family fortune when he died in 1992 was estimated by Forbes at USD$5 billion.[2] His son, Arthur, became chairman and president of Irving Oil.
MAGA idiots think “drill baby drill” will fix everything without understanding the complexity of oil and gas markets…. Even this dope of a President doesn’t understand and refuses to listen to those who do🙄
The oil companies have no incentive to drill more as increased supply will drive down their profit margins. Unless he's proposing we nationalize the oil companies, but that's socialism.
It does nothing when the rest of the world can reduce production to keep prices high and oil in reserve for when American production sputter through over drilling negating a Pentagon policy in place since WW2 to preserve our resources for national emergencies like war
You mean like the country where the goods are coming from pay the tariffs?
Thry have always be dumb, why else would they elect a RAPIST and a FELON...They hate their spawn that much?
It's even more lucrative for USA- net exporting (and consuming!) refined petroleum products that have a considerably higher value than the imported crude.
We're not even set up to refine domestic petrochem. Our Reginald are designed for lower quality Canadian crude. To refine domestic crude, there have to be completely overhauled.
Yep. The majority of US refineries were designed and built to process heavy crude, no the light crude that the US mostly produces.
Converting them would take major investments and massive refinery downtimes, both of which will drive up the price at the pump significantly.
Companies have to start charging for tariffs, when they start paying tariffs. How long would they wait, taking a loss during that time? How do you draw a demarcation line for the individual customer? It's counterintuitive, until you get it.
A whole lot of rural Trump voters depend on propane delivery in this country. This sort of thing is going to have a big impact on that group. Fucking good!
Who thinks US companies aren't going to raise prices? If something from Canada and the US both cost $1.00 last week, and now the Canadian item will be $1.25, what businessman is going to keep selling at $1.00, when he can bump up to $1.20?
My parents in their 70s say it was the best thing they ever did. There are some really advanced cold weather models. They still have electric baseboards as a supplement, but they’ve never switched them on since the heat pumps were installed. And now they finally have A/C in the summer.
That’s not necessary with modern heat pumps but it all depends on how old your unit is and if it’s coupled with a furnace or if it a standalone mini split system.
It's because they don't use it properly if they have one. You don't turn it on and off when you want heat, you find a comfortable temperature, set it, and don't touch it. If it's heating up a cold environment they suck but maintaining the temperature after the area reaches it is what it excels at.
Hi Prof. Irwin. We are reaching out to see if you can be a guest on a tariffs show we are producing. We've sent an email and look forward to hearing from you!
The Irving refinery in St. John, New Brunswick, supplies a substantial amount of refined products to my state of residence: Maine. Heating oil and gasoline prices are about to increase here. Maine is heavily reliant on cross-border trade. The economy here is going to take a big hit.
That's the irony; Trump carried Congressional District 2 (one electoral vote!). That district will be hurt badly by these tarrifs. Jared Golden (D) supports the tarrifs. It makes me crazy.
Don’t worry it won’t matter if it is a foreign or domestic product the prices will go up by more than the tariffs. Because the corporations see a opportunity to steal more money from their customers.
The only people doubting that duties and tariffs get it passed through to consumers are the Donald Trump bootlickers that lack critical thinking skills or the ability to google how shit actually works.
Yeah, I guess that contrary to media accounts the costs of tariffs get immediately transmitted to customers, but when they are lifted the higher prices remain sticky for a long time.
They were always stupid...That's why they lost for 40 years. LKets make sure any of this scum runs, its into a jail and not into the Capital..There will never be a MAGAT president again as long as I am alive...
Well, you can thank that to your fellow Americans who voted for a fascist oligarchy, and you can thank as well to all of those who didn't mind having tRump back, and didn't vote.
Trump is cooking some deal with Arab countries, China or even Russia with some great payouts for him and his friends.
And you dear Americans will pay for it.
It’s not just Canadian goods will be more expensive. So will be American ones since there will be a shortage of.
Good luck for both of us
After they already jack it up because winter happens.
Even though we went to the moon, the energy companies still do not understand how seasons work.
Like magnets. https://youtu.be/56BYMZfM6KU?si=d3yB6Vy-vN4WKqyu
In other words, the Tariff cost will be added. WILL BE ADDED. I don't see "Canada" paying for these Tariffs. Hey, maybe Musk at DOGE should be alerted to this wasteful, fraudulent, and abusive nonsense coming from inside the White House!
The collective ignorance of 1/3 of this country is mind boggling. Harris warned us, repeatedly, that his tariffs would cost the average family $4000 more a year. Wait till the deportations begin with farm workers. The produce that WE grow will increase & be less available with nobody to pick it.
And it's just starting, Canada is imposing tariffs in stages to give time for our companies to find alternative chain supplies but all will be done by end of February...
Tariffs are paid, via U.S. Customs, to the U.S. Treasury. And Musk now has control over the U.S. "checkbook." Fun times. I support Canada & Mexico on this.
I lived in Oromocto, Bathurst and Chatham (Mirimichi now). You haven't lived until you've lived across the river from a pulp and paper mill (Newcastle - early '70's)!
You sure it's just the cost of the tariff? Or are they keeping their profit margin on top of the new tariff costs too? So, closer to a 14% increase rather than 10%.
But you can send the bill for the increased cost to the Canadian Gov't can't you? I mean Trump said that it was the Canadians and the Mexican and the Chinese who were going to pay after all 🤣🤣🤣
The electric bill is high enough.. Propane has been a good buy here (northeast Pennsylvania). My budget is a good deal. I'm just worrying about the future, as we all must (especially the next 4 years!).
Interesting—do you think the price increase is solely due to the tariff, or could other factors like supply chain issues or demand shifts also be playing a role?
It's the importer who always pays tariffs and passes them on via the prices it charges its customers. That means the American people pay, not Canada or Mexico. You've been scammed, sadly.
Ours is going up too. 😠 We even payed extra for capped prices, but unfortunately tarrifs do not apply. Who in MAGA will pay for all of these increases? Where do we send the bill?
Reading the notification, they are waiting until the next scheduled delivery.
They're trying to run a business and their cost just went up 25%.
Do you expect them to eat the increase and eventually go bankrupt?
Amazing how trump & team keep claiming victimhood. What they really mean is, "That country said something bad about me so I'm going to misuse my power to get even & I don't care who it hurts in my own country."
The Irving family are based out of the Canadian province of New Brunswick. They didn’t get to be worth billions by being generous to their customers. 🤷🏻♂️

The Trump tariffs are equivalent in their effect to a declaration of war.
And America feels much more secure from all that Canadian fentanyl…right?
You’ll sleep better. Just not warmly I guess.

Probably banking on everyone being too indifferent to challenge the hike. Here's hoping they're wrong ✊
I don’t live there anymore, but I’m going back in a few weeks for a visit. And I suspect it won’t be great.

All because Melania smiled at Justin!!
Best explanation of Don's economics in 2 words.
He says that all the tariffs are supposed to make America rich.
Define "rich" for us.
No one gives a damn about the war on DEI, USAid, OPM, the FBI, etc. But this sort of thing moves the needle.
They need to have their faces rubbed in it until they can’t stand the smell.
Cheers from your friend, 🍁Canada.
And in the US (and probably here in Canada too) extraordinary charges can impact the contract price. You have to read the fine print.
The US are now trade agreement breakers.
They can’t just change it in a country with a functioning legal system without such a clause.
It's looking like it . . .
No more:
Tennessee whiskey
Disney World
Florida Oranges/Orange Juice (full of sugar anyway)
Peanut Butter
Idaho Potatoes
What else?
We get our new EV this week too.
Plan to buy made in Canada solar panels as well...
Also as stated in that post... I plan to put in solar panels.
Sorry.
iDJiT is the most ignorant president we ever had and that includes George W. In comparison GWB is a genius.
Under US law, they could be sued by shareholders for *not* doing that, since reduced profitability could negatively affect share price.
Irving is the largest landholder in Maine. How can they have no influence in the government to prevent this?
Thry have always be dumb, why else would they elect a RAPIST and a FELON...They hate their spawn that much?
It doesn't have to be exported
Converting them would take major investments and massive refinery downtimes, both of which will drive up the price at the pump significantly.
the new ones are good down to below 0F
I'm sitting further north than Nova Scotia with one heat pump keeping my whole house warm as it is -13°C.

BUT because of the tariffs, domestic producers can AND WILL raise prices to be just under the cost of imported gas.

I was literally sick to my stomach every single time we drove through a town with one as a kid, from the air pollution.
