I think there's a sense in which learning styles "feels" true. A lot of people would identify with e.g. wanting to try something instead of having it explained, feeling like they needed a diagram instead of an explanation etc. I can see why it's stuck around.

It's the sort of thing people want to believe in. It makes you feel good and like everyone can do equally well if only we get the conditions right.

It's also about meritocratic framing. We put such social penalties on people who find learning things harder we want to find a reason that isn't that. Learning styles does this. But it isn't kind at all because it's still saying there is shame in finding learning hard.

And because intrinsic motivation is an important factor in learning, it can make people more willing or enticed to learn if they are accessing it in a way they enjoy or find easier. In the same way that a placebo does sometimes work.
