Nobody really knows what to do with a President who defies legislation and courts, but who his party in Congress will never vote to hold accountable or remove.

This is a problem, and in all likelihood, the answer eventually boils down to a) states defy the President and/or b) citizens defy the President. Either gets ugly very fast.
Spot on analysis. This is scary stuff. I wish we were in a movie and a deus ex machina appeared. Meanwhile Trumps approval ratings are higher than 8 years ago. He might see it as yet another mandate.
I've been thinking about (a). The scenario where they selectively shut off federal payments to states they don't like but still expect tax revenue to be paid in just doesn't work. Collapse is much more likely than a dictatorship imposed by force on the western states
or no one does enough...I hope that is not the case, but nothing guaranteed. You're right to focus on these points--I am seeing lots of people are contacting their members of Congress about musk, so I hope that is a sign of growing energy from the people.
In extremis, some in the military might disobey illegal orders from the President, but they’re never going to take the initiative to oppose him politically.
The more likely scenario is one where the military is forced to take sides in a confrontation between the President and opposing states and/or citizenry, and fractures.
I've increasingly been thinking of the various court orders/etc against the administration as useful formal arguments to clarify and support potential future "Constitution vs executive branch orders" decision making by military leaders (at all levels), should it come to that.
I'm hoping there is some theoretical point at which even his own party will draw the line, albeit MUCH farther down the pathway to Abaddon than I would prefer. (1974's GOP had a line much better placed.)
