Thanks for all the responses. I think my real issue is fundamentally I'm just very attached to cooking with fire. I don't mind that it's hard to clean. I'll happily trade that for feeling in control of the heat, for the source of it be clearly palpable.

I'm about to ask an extremely boring domestic middle-class-coded question - anyone got any experience cooking with an induction hob? Is it substantially better than an electric ceramic in terms of heat responsiveness? Is it a pain in the hoop not being able to use some kitchenware? Thoughts please!
