I know that she doesn't know. I'm not putting down Sluggo. I'm giving Fritzi a hard time because she SHOULD have known. She should have made sure that the boat was properly provisioned before they set sail. The shortage of life belts is HER fault.
I know. My question is, why didn't Fritzi know? It's literally her JOB to know. She's responsible for their lives and should have made sure that they were properly equipped before setting sail.
I know. The plots over the past couple of years have repeatedly required Fritzi to act like an idiot in order to put the characters in peril and move the story along. I'm just pointing it out, that's all.
"Because the writer wanted to" is not a satisfying explanation for anything in any work of fiction. It needs to be examined through an in-universe perspective
Sluggo starts out as poor and Bushmiller say sometime in 1976 that Sluggo has to support himself. Later creators put Sluggo as living in an abandoned house and then being supported by truck driving "uncles" (family friends? actual relatives? I don't know) and having a "shady uncle" and "rich aunt."
Not my point. My point has always been that it was Fritzi's responsibility as Captain and guardian of Nancy and Sluggo to make SURE that there were enough life jackets for everyone before they cast off. Fritzi was derelict in her duty. He should never have been put into that situation.
Fritzi is a 20 something young woman raising her niece. Even older people have made foolish mistakes. There are people today who get lost and sometimes die in national parks because they trust the GPS of their cell phones. It was foolish of her to take the kids out by herself in the first place.
It means calm down, it’s not that serious. They seemed very angry about a character from almost 90 years ago and were making a bunch of comments about it.
I'm not angry. I ENJOY looking at Ernie's world of a bygone era through modern eyes. And if I'm a little obsessive-compulsive about it, that's on me and no one else. If some want to take Nancy at face value, fine. C'est la vie.
And in a matter of four panels, I’m left on the edge of my seat.
Certainly more dramatic than most of Fritzi’s adventures.
Nancy and Fritzi are Rose, while Sluggo is Jack.
Damn, Fritzi! You know absolutely NOTHING about sailing, do you? You ALWAYS provide enough life jackets for ALL of your passengers. I'll bet that you didn't check your radio and fuel before you left, either.
Oh yeah, this is the part when Sluggo died and then they brought in his cousin, Bluggo. But the continuity was too confusing to casual readers so they just called him Sluggo 2 and then Sluggo. The golden age!
They don’t have luck with vacations.
Completely unexpected location…Does Mark Trail show up to save them while discussing global warming’s impact on weather?

We don't know WHY she doesn't know. It's only one panel and all our knowledge about the situation comes only from it.
Just not that much.
