They should have made a hatch in the bottom you could screw a NVME hat onto, with a PCIE port on the mainboard oriented properly. Then people that needed the speed could grab a HAT and SSD.
Interesting, didn't look that closely! They're on the Pi 5, which seems like the design that was more or less copied-and-pasted over for the core layout.
ideally the coupling caps are close to the source (often even integrated on the IC), so for modules you don't typically see them be necessary on the carrier. There are exceptions like dual purpose DP/HDMI ports f.e. as HDMI is not AC coupled but DP is so its app dependent.

Raise the price $5 and put in the slot. Leave it empty, and void the warranty if the case is opened if you need to. The people who care about this wipe their asses with warranties.
Since I dont have the skills to make this work, I feel like I'm going to hold off getting a Pi 500 and wait until they make a version with the slot enabled.
Between the M.2 connector, the step-down voltage converter, and other discrete components, they aren't worth more than $2.
They didn't offer a good explanation of not putting them, so I assume they are greedy and they will offer a version with that option in the future. That's really sad.

That’s great news. My Pi500 is in the mail. As it’s intended for a kiddo to mess with, an SSD would be great for longevity/more space.
Let’s hope a future revision includes the $2 of parts required to enable the slot.
They are present on the CM5 so a carrier does not need them.

Unfortunately, not having the actual PCB with me makes very difficult to fully reverse engineer it, especially around the package sizes.
