I think you hit on something big here. If we want to broaden the pro-housing movement we should talk more about how zoning is literally a government handbook that dictates exactly what you can and cannot do with your property. We should frame zoning as an un-American government over reach.

The thing is, we talk alot about cities like Amsterdam, but most American suburbs, if made in an urbanist fashion wouldn't look like that. They'd look like a suburb of Amsterdam, or Paris, or Berlin, or Tokyo. They'd be quaint.

"Corporatist" is a weird insult. Density doesn't imply less ownership and there are probably two or three large national banks at most that own all the mortgages for the homes in that picture.

And all development is profit-driven, dense or not, and that's at these authors' insistence, not mine.
