I think that has to be the basis of any decent government or country: that structure exists to serve, protect, value--whatever words you want to use--its citizens. We seem to invent structures in our society in which we as a group do things we can't do individually, like building roads, etc.

Once corporate journalism didn't control the ad market, especially classified and local retail, they lost their power to stand firm. I think the future is going to be more-focused nonprofits like ProPublica (which don't do sports, food, fashion, etc).

An old High School classmate of mine is currently a reporter at Politico. He told me years ago that the primary goal of corporate media is to make money. Not tell the truth. Not inform people. Make money.
